June 10, 2015

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest post is by Alice Jones Webb. This week (Thursday to be exact) my younger son turns thirteen. This will officially make me the mother of THREE teenagers in case anyone is keeping score. (No . . .

QOES: How often do you wash your bra?

June 9, 2015

I saw this little decision tree on washing your bra and thought it was funny. Source I think (and hope) most of us would agree that underwear should be washing after one day of us, but what about bras? They don't technically touch the armpit, although they can certainly get smelly. I think I wash mine after about 5-6 wears. I don't have a system and I rotate through several bras each week, so it's hard to say. Probably when I think, "Hmm. I've worn this one a lot lately!" How about . . .

America . . . where a white woman yelling racist insults ends in the brutalization of black children

June 8, 2015

It's graduation season, and like many teens across the country, 19-year-old Tatiana Rose decided to throw a pool party for her friends. She and her family live in a subdivision in McKinney with a community pool, and she invited several friends to a BBQ . . . a reasonable thing to do. I'm sure many of us have attended parties at the community pools found in the subdivisions where our friends reside. I certainly have, and never with any incident. However, Tatiana and many of her friends who . . .

Yet when someone yells and curses, when I see vehicles that look like his, or when I smell a combination of cigarette smoke and motor oil, I am a child. I am 5 . . .

How to get the best Stitchfix clothes

June 5, 2015

I am a huge fan of Stitchfix. I have friends who have raved about it for years but I had every excuse in the book not to try it. "I'm too picky." "My body shape is too hard for someone else to shop for." "I need to try on my jeans."  Etc etc. Finally one day I broke down and tried it, after seeing so many cute outfits on other people. My first box was amazing. My second box was iffy. My third box was a miss. But I kept with it, because I noticed that one thing was always constant: the . . .

Wednesday’s Child: Zach

June 3, 2015

Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

Surviving as an introverted mother

June 3, 2015

Years ago, I was chatting with my sister-in-law, who had babies at around the same time I did. She was talking about how much she loved her kids. When they were napping, she would go in and watch them sleep. Sometimes, she said, she was tempted to wake them up so that she could play with them. When I heard that, I felt as if I was punched in the gut. I had never, in my few years as a parent, felt that way. Did she have some kind of innate mothering instinct that I lacked? My husband and I had . . .
