I was 19 weeks and at the ultrasound we found out the baby didn't have a heartbeat. Suddenly, I was faced with all these decisions . . .
#TBT: The series of unfortunate events
Only Thursdays I post from the vault. This is from July 2010, during another time our house was torn up. There were a few incidences last week that set into motion our current vagabond existence: The RatOn Monday morning, Jafta woke up early to use the bathroom, and we suddenly heard him calling for help. Mark ran in to find Jafta staring at a rat in the toilet. THE LID HAD BEEN CLOSED. I can't decide which part of this story is more bizarre: the fact that this rat somehow swam up . . .
Wednesday’s Child: Nicholas
Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

Two weeks later, my husband was in the hospital to prevent the very same thing. I don’t tell you this because I want you to feel bad for . . .
Growing Up ‘White,’ And Becoming Black: A Transracial Adoptee’s Take On The Rachel Dolezal Story
This is a guest post by Chad Goller-Sojourner Had Rachel Dolezal grown up in a black neighborhood, attended black schools and immersed herself in black culture, I could sort of understand her self-identifying as black adjacent. I say “sort of” because her home base would still have been white. While identity development continues throughout one’s lifetime, it is during our childhood and adolescence where the greatest impacts are made. Since children tend to stay close to home during . . .
QOES: Swimming in anything other than a pool – gross or super gross?
Let's be honest and admit we all like to pull denial over us like a Snuggie when it comes to what may be lingering in public pools and we're pretty cool with jumping in. That's what chlorine is for, right, you guys? But what about everywhere else people tend to swim? I am totally down for swimming in the ocean, but that is it. Anything where there is moss or rock or fish under foot, I am not into it. I don't like creeks. I don't like ponds. I don't like lakes. Ocean - that is it. . . .
Tessel: a Father’s Day gift for the practical guy
This post was sponsored by Tessel Supply. I've always thought that women were easier to shop for than men. Scented candles, smelly lotions, lipgloss, flowers . . . it is not hard to shop for my mom on Mother's Day. But finding something perfect for the men in my life often proves to be a challenge. It also doesn't help that my husband is a low maintenance guy who typically buys the things he wants for himself. He's pretty simple and doesn't yearn for many products. He doesn't like to splurge . . .

Camping for non-campers
This post is sponsored in partnership with trekaroo and KOA campgrounds. I don't camp. It's a mantra I've been repeating for as long as I can remember. It's not that I'm opposed to nature. Or even roughing it. It's mostly the fact that I have terrible insomnia, and every camping experience of my life has involved me lying wide awake in a sleeping bag, unable to sleep and with no where to go, only to be woken up at the crack of dawn. I like elements of camping. I like being out . . .
