Texting Rules for Tweens and Teens

April 3, 2017

This year, my kids have ventured into the world of texting with peers. Their time on the cell phone has increased as they socialize with friends after school via the phone, and group chats abound as well. While I can appreciate their desire to connect with friends, I've also observed the danger in these texting relationships. There have already been some hurt feelings, and I see kids sometimes taking the advantage of the detachment of a screen to behave in ways they would never act in real life. . . .

April 2, 2017

Here are some things I read this week that made me think. (These are just snippets - click on the title to read the whole thing.) A Psychologist Explains How to Revive a Dead Friendship from Cari with Science of Us Whether you broke up with some sense of finality or just let things fade out, there’s a reason you ended things last time around — and whatever pushed you two apart may not have gone away. “Sometimes we romanticize our friendships, and maybe we forget some of the reasons why . . .

13 April Fools’ ideas for slacker parents

April 1, 2017

I’m not one of those parents who lives for April Fools’ Day. Or even acknowledges to my children that it exists in the first place. But my kids are in on the day, and they have expectations. Their expectations look something like this: Ain’t noboy got time for that. I’ve got to find some pranks that are easy to implement, and that don’t require a visit to the craft store. Or baking. So I’ve rounded up a few ideas for simple pranks I can pull with things we’ve already got. ———— 13 April . . .

I lived under Mike Pence’s rules regarding the opposite sex. Here’s why it’s problematic.

March 31, 2017

This past week, the internet has been ablaze upon learning that Mike Pence has some rules around opposite-gender relationships, including a restriction on dining one-on-one with any woman except his wife. While many people find it ludicrous and have taken the opportunity to poke fun, those of us who have spent portions of our lives entrenched in evangelical circles are not really surprised at all. Not being alone with a member of the opposite sex is a standard-issue boundary for many married . . .

March 31, 2017

I feel like I've seen the FabFitFun boxes all over social media, but I've never gotten one. Their boxes are valued at over $200 but retail . . .
