If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s post is by Manal Khalife. I want you to know that postpartum depression is real. I want you to know that I didn't make myself depressed, it wasn't all in my head and I didn't want to be depressed. I want you to know . . .

the mighty mighty life list

September 16, 2011

Tomorrow, I’m catching a plane to northern California to attend this year’s Mighty Summit.  Mighty Summit is an annual getaway weekend for professional bloggers and content creators hosted by Maggie Mason and Laura Mayes.  I’ve heard it’s a life-changing experience from those who have attended before, and I’m thrilled to have been invited this year. A part of the weekend experience is empowering each other to reach our goals, based on life lists we’ve written ourselves.  A life . . .

blogging with microsoft live writer

September 16, 2011

A couple weeks ago I gave a little tutorial on how I blog from my iphone.  I thought I would also share on of my favorite tools for blogging from the computer: Windows Live Writer (WLW).  I am always amazed when I talk to bloggers who write their post within the native Blogger or Wordpress interface, because Windows Live Writer is just makes the whole process so much easier. Windows Live Writer is a blog publishing application.  It is a desktop application, so you can use it even . . .

Homeless, Hipster, or Redneck: A Guide to Distinguishing The Younger Generation

September 14, 2011

I remember as a teenager that my mother was often aghast and confused at the things I found fashionable.  This seemed especially true whenever one of those trends was a throw-back to something she had an association with from her own childhood.  When I went through a bohemian phase, I remember her asking me why I would want to dress like a hippie, the word hippie dripping off her tongue with the same contempt that one might use for the word pervert or cancer.  I remember . . .

what would you love to outsource, and what would you do with the time?

September 14, 2011

One of my biggest learnings this year, as I’ve struggled to balance work and four kids and some semblance of order in my home, has been that I cannot do it all myself.  In fact, when people ask my advice about being a working mom, it’s always the same: find a way to outsource some of your tasks.  I think women have been trying for to long to enter the workplace and maintain the same level of “homemaking” that their stay-at-home mom friends are maintaining, and the result is that we . . .

last week in iphone photos (and an eviction update)

September 13, 2011

First of all, thanks to everyone for your feedback on our crazy tenant situation.  It was a good motivator to have so many of you emphatically telling me to get her out, because I did waver a bit with feeling badly, wanting to help, BEING TOTALLY CODEPENDENT, etc.  But as Mark said to me on Saturday, "We're just going to need her to have this life crisis at a location other than here."  Anyways, with a little confrontation she did admit to hitting something with my car.  She . . .

that’s what SHE said: back to school edition

September 12, 2011

It’s been interesting reading so many moms write about the back-to-school experience in the past few weeks. So many parallels to my own feelings. One aspect of motherhood seems universal: no matter where we live or where our kids go to school, we worry about how it will go for them. Here are a few musings on the kids going back to school. These are just snippets, click on the title to read the whole post.   Nuts about peanut butter | Motherhood Uncensored:   To me, having to . . .

what I want you to know: surviving an abusive relationship

September 11, 2011

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s post is by Misty. I want you to know that it didn’t start out as abuse. Let’s get real for a moment, shall we? Everyone puts their best foot forward when you begin to date someone. It is a gradual series of increasing . . .

how we came to have a potentially crazy person living in our backyard who more than likely wrecked my minivan

September 10, 2011

The last two days have been seriously, seriously bizarre, and I’m afraid we’ve found ourselves with a crazy person living in our backyard. A little back story: We have a small studio apartment behind our house. As I mentioned, previously we bartered the rental of our backhouse apartment for part-time nanny services.  That didn’t work out so well, so I decided to put all of the kids in preschool 3 mornings a week, and figured we could leverage the backhouse for a housekeeper.  We live . . .

flower girl for hire

September 9, 2011

India is dying to be a flower girl in someone's wedding.  She asks me every single day when someone will finally pick her to be a flower girl.  I think in her mind, this role is the childhood equivalent to being a princess.  Which she is also really keen on doing.  So, look.  I'm just putting it out there.  WE'RE OLD.  Most of our friends are married already.  Lots of them are already getting divorces even.  It looks unlikely that . . .
