check out these charity:water sponsors
The following individuals and companies made a generous donation to the Camp Mighty charity:water campaign. I hope you will check out their sites! I’m honored to have such creative folks reading my blog and partnering with me in the effort to bring clean water to Ethiopia. what I want you to know: a plea from your single friend
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. This guest post is a cross-post Lemmonex, authored by Lexa who also writes with me at MamaPop. She kindly let me reprint it here because I think it’s an important reminder. Hey, you. Yes, you. Look, I think it is . . .
holiday gift guide 2011
Here are some fun gift ideas for the holiday season. I tried to include a mix of item based on a few criteria: Some items I chose because they are unique and different (like a cardboard antler head or a gadget that makes guitar picks out of old credit cards). I tried to include some handmade and fair-trade items (like handmade ceramics and fair-trade chocolate) and some eco-friendly items (like re-usable shopping bags and artsy dish towels). I also included some things that I . . .
family portraits 2011
Every year around this time I stress out completely over getting our family portraits done. I obsess over the outfits, the location, and most importantly: how I can wrangle a bunch of small children into smiling and looking at the camera so I can get the quintessential tableau of the happy, carefree, perfect family that we are. (Stop laughing). We’ve been through our horror days of bad Sears portraits (Exhibits A, B, and C): A couple years ago we finally ponied up for a . . .
the seven stages of parent-teacher conference panic
Jafta had his first parent-teacher conference of first grade this week. The teacher planned the conference pretty far in advance, so it was nearly a month ago that she sent home the schedule with the tentative times for the conference. I noticed pretty quickly that while every kid in the class appeared to be schedule for a 30 minute conference, it appeared that the time slot directly after Jafta’s conference had been blocked out. Jafta’s conference was the second . . .
interracial couples and transracial families in film
While I was at Camp Mighty this weekend several of us watched the movies Bridesmaids in our hotel room. I’ve got lots of interesting things to say about Camp Mighty (spoiler alert: it was awesome) but while I’m unpacking and catching up on some cuddle time with the kids, I’m leaving you a topic that I’d like you to discuss amongst yourselves. It’s something that I’ve been ruminating on since watching the wedding scene in Bridesmaids that portrayed the main character’s parents: . . .

Too many people read it who know us In Real Life. Too many people who would read about it and . . .
there shall be weeping and pulling of teeth
Jafta had two teeth pulled at the dentist yesterday. Now before you go feeling too sorry for him, let me just tell you: he was THRILLED. On several levels: He missed half a day of school He knew it meant DOUBLE the tooth fairy money He thought the numb lip thing was awesome They put his teeth in a “treasure box” that he got to keep I have always been a bit phobic about the dentist, so his cavalier (maybe even excited?) attitude about the whole thing was confusing . . .
october photo dump
It’s been a really long time since I uploaded the iphone photos onto the blog. Here’s a big ole’ bunch of photos from the last month. Mimi, this one’s for you! I love one-piece PJ’s. I tried to get a picture of them all wearing them one night but the boys insisted on holding their guitars for the photo. Maybe to off-set the fact that they are in one-piece pajamas? Then India decided to use Rapunzel as a violin and Karis started singing. They made a pretty . . .
what I want you to know: discovering a sex offender lives in the neighborhood
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. This post is written by Jaimie Bowman. On Halloween night, we made a horrifying discovery after we came home and put the boys to bed. We went trick-or-treating at a sex offender's house. I know. While we were walking . . .
