talk back tuesday (thursday): how do you do Christmas?

December 27, 2012

I’m curious to hear how other people celebrate Christmas.  When do you open gifts? Do your kids believe in Santa? Do you have Christmas at your own home, or do you visit parents or in-laws? Growing up, we did the same thing every Christmas . . . we drove from Missouri to Florida to visit my grandparents, and we opened our gifts on Christmas morning.  I remember having friends who attended midnight mass and opened their gifts on Christmas Eve. That blew my mind – how did Santa come if . . .

design dilemma: painting the piano

December 23, 2012

This week we officially moved into our new house. It’s been a rough go, though I supposed moving a family of 6 is never a smooth transition. We still have some work to do: we’re waiting on kitchen countertops so we are eating off paper plates and using a hot plate to cook,  and there are boxes to unpack in every room. But we’re here. Now that we are in, I am second-guessing some of my painting intentions. When I do this, I tend to get caught in a web of indecision, and then I do nothing. . . .

gift guide for the ladies

December 19, 2012

A couple weeks ago I did a post of some gift ideas for kids. But I also wanted to do a fun list for the moms, sisters, and grandmas in our lives. These are some items that I think most women would enjoy . . . with an emphasis on items that are fair-trade, handmade, or that give back to the community. 1. Ann Taintor vintage plates 2. Tazo fair-trade chocolates 3. Cinnamon Sticks hand-stamped custom stackable rings 4.  Snapsac reusable shopping totes 5. Marie infinity scarf from Krochet Kids . . .

christmas babble

December 19, 2012

I’ve been musing about the holidays over at Babble, and thought I would share some links. First, I got a little nostalgic and shared My Favorite 80′s Holiday Movies from Childhood. One Magic Christmas, anyone? Anyone? I also shared My Top Ten Favorite Christmas Albums. (What are yours?) I also did an Awkward Family Photo Retrospective, sharing some of our best and worst family photos over the years, including this year’s family portrait. I just . . . I can’t even with this picture. I wrote . . .

talk back tuesday: what’s on your tree and who put it there?

December 18, 2012

We are in the middle of moving into our new house, and I have been struggling to figure out when and where to put up the Christmas tree. I was considering abandoning it altogether since we are traveling for Christmas, but after lamenting our lack of Christmas décor Mark finally took pity on me and set it up in the new house. We aren’t completely moved in yet, but it made more since to have it there since the big goal is to be completely moved in by Christmas morning. Our schedules have been . . .

the inconvenient truth about mental health and gun control

December 17, 2012

I’m still reeling from the tragedy that took place last week, trying to process the events and, like many people, wondering what can be done to prevent such a tragedy from befalling other families in our nation.  I’ve seen a growing conversation on the need for better access to mental health services.  As a therapist, I heartily agree that mental health needs to be available to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. I want nothing more than to see our country step it up in that . . .
