Women of the World Conference tackles adoption and orphan care with Dr. Jane Aronson
Last week there was a powerful adoption panel during the Women of the World Conference. It was livestreaming and I tried to share the link on Twitter and Facebook, but by the time most people clicked over, the conference had moved on to an interview with the creator of Spanx. So, several people followed my “Please go watch – this is so important” teaser to find a video about Spanx. Um . . . sorry? While Spanx are fantastic, the video I really wanted people to see was an interview . . .
Painting a piano (before and after)
It’s been over a year since I bought our piano (a $100 score at a local Goodwill – you can read about that adventure here). I had every intention of painting the thing, but as life happens, it never got checked off the to-do list. Once we moved into the new house, I was determined to get it painted, once and for all. But indecision about the color put things on hold (again). I couldn’t decide between bright yellow or turquoise blue. Or green? A simple search of painted pianos yielded so many . . .
Questions of eternal significance: what was your favorite toy as a child?
I was thinking about childhood toys today, as Karis was playing with one of mine. The toy I have the most memories of playing with as a child was this Sesame Street Playhouse from Fisher Price: I loved this thing so much as a kid that when I had my own, I went searching for one on ebay. I ended up paying an obscene amount for an intact set, but it was worth it. Karis plays with it daily, and I really think it is her favorite, too. Today several of the figures were having a tea party . . .
I am a composter and so can you! (composting for beginners)
If you’d asked me a couple years ago about composting, I would have assumed it was a fringe thing that hippie mamas in Birkenstocks did. Storing your trash and turning it into soil just seemed so . . . granola. Way too granola for this city dweller. But then I visited my sister-in-law Jodie in Seattle, and noticed a small little container on her counter that she used to collect composting items. She showed me how it worked and really demystified it for me, and suddenly I saw it as . . .
Must-have items for frequent travel
I’ve been traveling quite a bit for work over the past year. My trips are usually pretty short (about 2-3 days on average) so I’ve been slowly learning how to pack more efficiently, and what items can make the whole process a bit more peaceful. From the scarcity of healthy food on planes to the dilemma of hotel breakfasts, from juggling your carry-ons in the airport to remembering what to pack . . . I’ve compiled my best tips for travel over at Babble.com. . . .
What i want you to know about living with bipolar disorder
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by an anonymous reader. What I want you to know is that I am a mother of two, a wife, a full-time employee, and oh yeah, I have Bipolar Disorder. I was first diagnosed with it when I was 14 years . . .
Rick Warren’s grief: the comfort and cruelty of speculating on suicide
I was devastated to hear the news of Rick Warren’s son, who took his own life on Friday after a lifetime of battling serious mental illness. I don’t know Rick well, but we have met a few times and have many common friends, having served in similar ministry circles here in Orange County. I have heard Rick speak about his children on a few occasions, and he always struck me as a loving and compassionate dad. A story that sticks out in my mind was the time Rick’s daughter tried out for a team and . . .
The Draper Report: Mad Men season 6 premiere recap
Sarah and I had so much fun doing our Downton Abbey recaps that we decided we would do the same thing for the other show we are both crazy about: Mad Men. It seems like we’ve been waiting ages for this show to come back on the air, and the premeire . . . was not what we expected. I’ll avoid spoilers here, but we found the episode dark and confusing. We are dying to hear if you agree with our reactions. Did you like the episode? Did you find it slow? What are your thoughts on the . . .
Comment of the week
From someone going by the name “America”: #1: Maybe if parents would just slap some sense into their ignorant ass-clown children nowadays, we wouldn't have so many issues. All these little devil children running around, demanding things from all those elderly, and not having an ounce of respect in their little devil children bodies. The Media, the TV, the Internet that parents let their kids engulf their lives these days is the reason every single generation for the last 20 years, are full of . . .
So Totally Relidge: what is biblical womanhood?
This week on our recap of religious hot topics on the internet, Elizabeth and I are talking about biblical womanhood, and the controversy sparked by Rachel Held Evan’s book A Year of Biblical Womanhood: How a Liberated Woman Found Herself Sitting on Her Roof, Covering Her Head, and Calling Her Husband "Master. What are your thoughts on biblical womanhood? Are we all really picking and choosing? . . .
