What I’m reading: spring/summer 2013
I’ve mentioned before that I’m a bit of a book hoarder. I usually have a precariously-placed tower of books on my nightstand, but recently that tower has spilled over onto the floor and the nearby chair. I thought I’d share a few of the books I’ve enjoyed recently. Instant Mom by Nia Vardalos – This memoir details Nia’s journey through infertility and then the foster-adopt system with humor and poignancy. I love it. Wild by Cheryl Strayed – In her 20’s, Cheryl made the decision to backpack . . .
what i want you to know about having multiple miscarriages
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by Anne R. With my very first pregnancy, I went for my first ultrasound alone because Saeed (my husband) had a big meeting at work. I fully expected to bring home pictures of the baby for him to . . .
Talk to me about Minecraft
Jafta is 8-years-old, and in his mind every single other child his age is playing Minecraft during their free time. He and his friends talk about Minecraft ALL THE TIME, and the funny thing is, I finally asked a couple of the parents about it and their kids aren’t even playing it either. They are just obsessed. Obsessed with talking about it, thinking about it, and dreaming about how much better life would be with access to Minecraft. Jafta has been begging me to let him play at home, and I’m . . .
Defending Paula Deen: what the national reaction can teach us about race
There has been a lot of press about the recent lawsuit filed against Paula Deen, alleging (among other things) that she tolerated blatant racism towards the staff in her company’s restaurants (including separate entrances for black employees) and referred to black men as “n*ggers” to another employee. At this point, the case is a bit of a she-said, she said, with Paula denying most of the allegations. While I suspect the truth lies someone in the middle, I’m going to focus on the things . . .
Reminiscing on my favorite summer job
The movie The Way Way Back is about to hit theaters, and so far it’s the summer movie I’m most excited to see. I’m not one for the big summer blockbusters (Superman? meh) and this looks quirky and funny and poignant. It is written by Nat Faxon & Jim Rash, who also wrote the screenplay for The Descendants, but (randomly) I’ve been a fan of this duo since their days doing improv at The Groundlings. It also stars Rob Corddry, Steve Carrell. Sam Rockwell and Maya Rudolph. And the plot revolves . . .
RIP, Google Reader: a primer for following your favorite blogs
In case you haven't heard, Google Reader’s last day is today. Womp womp womp. This service was the most popular means of subscribing to blogs and reading them all in one place, and the reason for it’s retirement is mysterious at best But I felt it worth mentioning since according to my stats, abot 7,000 of you are still accessing this blog via Google Reader. So . . . listen up! You need to come out of your denial and make some changes. (That last sentence was mostly for myself.) Those of us . . .
that’s what SHE said: accessorizing with black people, the confusion of healthy eating, leaving the internet, and more . . .
Baratunde Thurston Left The Internet For 25 Days, And You Should Too | Fast Company I considered fleeing to a remote island for a few weeks, but I realized I wasn’t craving physical escape. I didn’t actually want to be alone. I just wanted to be mentally free of obligations, most of which asserted themselves in some digital fashion. I decided to stay still, find an Airbnb residence right in Brooklyn (technically homeless, remember?), and step back from digital interaction. Yes, me. The . . .
Coffee for kids
A couple months ago I took a trip to New York to shoot a commercial for Happy Family . . . a brand of organic snacks for kids. I wrote about the trip here, but have been anxiously waiting to see the final cut of the commercial I shot with them They wanted me to share a funny story about getting my kids to eat something healthy, so I shared the way I used to convince my kids that green juice in a coffee cup was actually coffee. My cofeeshop ruse worked out pretty well for me when Jafta and India . . .
Mama Said: What bad habits have you had to change to set a good example for your children?
This month Sarah James and I are taking questions from our readers. In this episode we're talking about those not-so-stellar habits we've had to change so that we aren't setting a bad example for the children. How do you break bad habits? If you have any questions you would like us to answer in a future video, leave them in the comments! . . .
Christian responses to DOMA and Prop 8
Yesterday, as SCOTUS rendered the verdict to both the DOMA and Prop 8 cases, I saw a wide variety of responses from Christians, ranging from frustration to elation. Over at Deeper Story, a faith website where I’m a contributor, several of us shared our thoughts. What I appreciate most about Deeper Story (and why I ‘m proud to be a part of the team) is their commitment to allowing varied viewpoints among Christians: There are many diverse views on same-sex marriage – and homosexuality itself – . . .
