How the Christian orphan care movement may be enabling child abandonment
Last week I got to speak at Idea Camp about orphan care. I shared my concerns about the trend of churches opening orphanages in third world countries instead of working at keeping children together with their parents. I suggested that the solution to poverty orphans (children who are placed as a result of poverty instead of the death of a parent) should be to provide resources to the family, instead of requiring the child to move into an orphanage for assistance. I shared my belief that the . . .
How to watch season 4 of Downton Abbey in the U.S.
I might have mentioned that I’m a bit of a dork-fan about Downton Abbey. Perhaps in one of the weekly, emotionally-wrought recaps I’ve done of every single episode with my friend Sarah James. Downton Abbey is a UK show, and usually airs in the UK several months before it hits PBS here in the US. I used to wait for months before it would air here. Then I stumbled upon a way for Americans to get our Downton Abbey fix. It’s a VPN hack called TunnelBear, and according to their website it’s . . .
Travel weary, wanderlust, and loneliness in community
I’ve been traveling a lot this month. Every year it seems like this happens – the few events that require travel seem to align within the same month (or week) so that I have months upon months of little to no travel and then a string of trips closely scheduled. The week before last, I went to San Francisco with two colleague to do some meetings. It seems almost unfair to call this a business trip, because while we definitely had some important meetings, we also had some down-time, . . .
Tolerable table games with young kids
Figuring out how to play games with my kids has been a chore, because the variance in age ranges has always meant that I had enthusiastic older kids wanting to play, and not-quite-mature-enough younger kids ready to steal turns, move chips, and hulk-smash the whole operation. We’ve finally gotten to a stage where we can enjoy a few table games, and much of it was about finding the right games for younger kids. I decided to do a round-up of some of our favorites over at Babble . . . one for the . . .
That’s what SHE said: bad moms and link bait, getting the nails dirty, habits of happy folk, cell phones as nihilism, and more . . .
Writing About Fashion Week Has Made Me Feel Like Shit About Myself I know women come in every shape and size, and it’s all good, but it is HARD to look exclusively at pictures of very thin women and not start to feel a little like shit. And not to open a whole ‘nother can of worms, but women of color have the added bonus of seeing the unrelenting whiteness on many of the runways, and that’s an even more depressing and infuriating issue. I get all the reasons the models are supposed to be . . .

This month on Mama Said, Sarah and I talked about our dream hobbies . . . the things we would LIKE to do, but don’t because of fear or other obstacles. What are your dream hobbies? . . .

Mid-September photo dump
It is as hot as it has been all summer right now, so we are refusing to believe it is over. We just discovered a local yoga studio that has classes for kids. The family that poses together . . . Jafta got to try a maple bacon choolate bar this week. Predictably, he loved it. I ordered the kids’ Halloween costumes a month early from Zulily, because I was paranoid I would forget later. We’ve been attempting to learn djembe drums via YouTube. It’s . . .

Differentiating autism from SPD or attachment issues in adopted children
When I talk to other adoptive moms, especially those who have adopted kids from hard circumstances, I often hear concerns about autism. It’s a familiar concern to me because one of my kids raised a lot of red flags in regards to autism symptoms. When my oldest was about two, I was beginning to have real concerns about his development. He had a hard time making eye contact at close range. He was always crashing into things, touching things, invading the space of others, etc. He . . .
