Organizing our technology
This post was sponsored by BlueLounge for Target. There are a lot of challenges that come with living in the technological age… the demands on our time of being constantly reachable, the potential distraction from being present, and the unique challenges of monitoring kids and their time on screens. But one of the aspects of our tech use that continues to allude me is how to store all of our devices. Ironically, I would consider us a pretty low-tech family. But with four kids and two . . .

Christmas snapshots
We had a nice, mellow Christmas this year. We often travel on Christmas, so it was so nice to have the day at home to just do what we wanted. None of my kids believe in Santa anymore, but as you can see that hasn’t stifled their enthusiasm. We have mastered the art of dragging out Christmas morning - a skill I learned from my mom. First the big unwrapped gifts. Then stockings. Then breakfast. Finally, at 11am, we're ready to open presents. One of the big gifts this year was . . .

Family Portraits 2014
We did our portraits this year with Kristin Rogers again. She’s a local photographer that I’ve long admired for her slice-of-life instagram account (and she is also an adoptive mom.) We went back to the same hilltop spot we go every year and found that it had been razed to accommodate for a new housing community! So we ended up finding another spot on the fly. A few more buildings in the background than in previous years but I’m still so happy with how they came out. Tea Collection . . .
Christmas Eve then and now, and some bad family caroling
We had a mellow Christmas Eve today. It was the first day in a long time that Mark and I really had no work obligations. December has been a busy month and it was nice to have a day totally focused on holiday and family. And now comes the part where I barrage you with photos from Christmas Eve. And not just this year! I have nostalgic and self-indulgent older photos to post, too! Still here? And ready to take a stroll down memory lane? For the last fourteem years, we've . . .
Kids responding to gifts: where honesty and kindness collide
We’ve all experienced it, though I’m not sure anyone has come up with a name for it. The Christmas Cringe? The Seasonal Squirm? Mortified Yuletide? Whatever we call it, it's that moment when your child gets a gift from a well-meaning family member...and it immediately becomes clear that your child won’t like the gift. Maybe they already have one. Or it was last year's popular toy and has lost its appeal. Or it's just not appropriate because your son is into skateboards and not baseball, but . . .
A template for your annual braggy Christmas letter
[photo credit] I have a love-hate relationship with the Christmas letter. I’ve always loved getting those letters from friends: reading them, keeping up with their activities, and watching their children age in the delightful photos. And while I loved reading them, I also began to become annoyed at how easily these letters turned into here’s-why-our-family-is-awesome PSAs. In the early 2000s, I started writing a satirical Christmas letter—we called it The Howertons’ Fabulous, Fabulous Lives®—and . . .
