What I want you to know about parenting a child through anxiety and depression
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest post is by Christie. I should know what to do. I should say or do or feel the right thing, that perfect mom-thing, that makes everything okay. From the moment those pink lines appeared on . . .
Why do I even bother?
This summer, my 10-year-old did some epic things. He zip-lined over the rainforests of Costa Rica. He strolled the streets of Amsterdam. He hung out with Massai Warriors in Tanzania. He took a boat ride under the Eiffel Tower. He went on a safari to the Serengeti. But apparently, this is what he remembers of his summer. This. This is why we can’t have nice things. . . .
Wednesday’s Child: Rebecca
Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

Then a year and a half later, we got the crazy idea that we should adopt an older child. So we did. Our . . .
Trick-or-treating at Disneyland
My family got the chance to visit Disneyland this past weekend, to experience their yearly Mickey's Halloween Party. This is one of my favorite times of the year at Disneyland. It feels like the first big foray into fall and the holiday season, and I love the way Disney does Halloween in a way that it scary but not TOO scary. Trick-or-treating in costume across Disneyland? Yes, please. The boys had a football game that Mark was coaching, so it was just me and the girls for the evening. . . .
Are cute and comfortable heeled shoes mutually exclusive?
This post is sponsored by Söfft Shoes I have always been a fan of heeled shoes. I'm short, and I have big feet, and flats make me look like I'm wearing clown shoes. I like having a bit of a lift and also prefer wedges for the way they make my legs look longer. In the summer, I’m usually in wedge sandals. In the winter, a heeled boot. However, I don’t have the greatest feet, and at the ripe old age of 40 I’ve found that I need a lot of support in my shoes. As I've gotten older it's been . . .

That’s what SHE said: the myth of quality time, how to compliment little girls, & things to do and theatre to see
THE MYTH OF QUALITY TIME | New York Times In this prosaic op-ed piece, Frank Bruni debunks the myth of "quality time" through the discoveries revealed to him by committing to his annual family beach trip and staying for the entire seven days and seven nights. In earlier years, he admits to joining the vacation late or leaving early because he craved his space and thought shorter would be better - quality over quantity. But over the years he has found that there is no substitute for physical . . .
The dilemma of sleep and the late-nighter parent
This post is sponsored by Sleep Number. I have always been a late-night kind of person. My mother was, too. I remember growing up, watching my mom get a burst of energy right around the time we were all going to bed. It seemed like this was the time when she always got absorbed in a project. It wasn’t unusual for us to hear the sewing machine start to hum at 1am. It’s still not unusual to get a phone call or facebook notification from her . . .
