That’s what SHE said: why we marry wrong, the truth about aging, the struggle for optimism, 19 things about adoption, the Stanford victim’s powerful letter to her attacker and more…
WHY YOU WILL MARRY THE WRONG PERSON | nytimes.com An interesting, slightly cynical look at what really drives that feeling of "knowing it's right' when we meet Mr. or Mrs. Right..."But though we believe ourselves to be seeking happiness in marriage, it isn’t that simple. What we really seek is familiarity — which may well complicate any plans we might have had for happiness. We are looking to recreate, within our adult relationships, the feelings we knew so well in childhood. The love most of . . .

#TBT: The lengths I will go to in order to avoid making a phone call
On Thursdays I post something from the archives. This is from July 2011. I've been wanting to get a piano for our house for almost a year now. We previously had a baby grand but it took up too much space, so we sold it and then my plan was to replace it with an upright. But Craig's List . . . it's just so much work with the calling and the appointment-making. Finally, this week I found a piano at a local thrift store. Only $99! It's really plain but that's what I . . .
Wednesday’s Child: Seth
Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

Summer self-care goals
I've talked before about how self-care can be a difficult thing for me. "Self-care" sound like such a frivolous thing, especially to someone like me. I struggle with perfectionism and caretaking for others, so self-care can feel self indulgent and unnecessary. But I am realizing, more and more, that self-care is actually a vital ingredient in me being a good writer, a good mother, and a healthy person. It is something I am trying to take seriously this year. As such, I've made some goals for . . .
Gorilla encounters and the culture of blame
Like many of you, I watched the video of a child falling into a gorilla habitat in horror, especially as he was dragged around a body of water like a ragdoll by his foot. I am still stunned that the child did not to drown or suffer any life-threatening injuries. I can't imagine what it must have felt like to be that mom. And as I heard her voice calling out her son thaf "mommy's right here," just trying to offer him comfort in the midst of that trauma, I felt so much empathy for . . .

Summer shoe guide
This post is the result of my annual quest for the perfect summer shoe. I’ll confess, I always find summer shoes a challenge. I don’t have the greatest feet, and at the ripe old age of 41 I’ve found that I need a lot of support in my shoes. Gone are the days when I could just grab a pair of trendy, cheap shoes at H&M or Target. While good, supportive shoes are more expensive, I’ve found that investing in a few pair saves money (and back pain) in the long run. . . .
