Statistics from a large study conducted last year confirm what seems like common . . .
#TBT Surviving as a working mom during the summer
On Thursdays I post something from the archives. This is from June 2015. Kahil Gibran once suggested that joy and sorrow are inseparable. They arrive together, he wrote. "When one sits alone with you ... remember that the other is asleep upon your bed." I get it, man. You're describing what summertime is to me. Growing up, summer was the best thing in the world, and I love revisiting that freedom and happiness when my kids are on their break. I get to spend more time with them. I get . . .
Wednesday’s Child: Makari
Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

That’s what SHE said: who were the Dallas shooting victims, Trevor Noah on being pro-cop and pro-black, guns more than an instrument but the issue, how to shut down the remark ‘All Lives Matter’, how to be a white ally fighting racism and more…
THREE TERRIBLE DAYS OF VIOLENCE | newyorker.com A look at our gun culture and the "American Crucible" it has created just days after celebrating our independence.."This week has become a grotesque object lesson in gun culture, one that points to a conclusion that we could have and should have drawn long ago—that the surfeit of weapons at our disposal and the corresponding fears that they induce create new hazards. There is no telling how any of these specific horrors will be resolved. But . . .

On Alton Sterling and why I will always film police interactions with people of color
A couple days ago I posted about why I will always film any police interactions with people of color. I had witnessed a black man getting arrested down the street from our house. The police were kind and respectful, and very careful as they put him into the car. But I filmed the entire interaction anyway. And will always film. I will hope for the best and assume, as these guys were, that police officers will act with integrity. But until our country's issues with unnecessary police violence . . .
#TBT: Why I protest police brutality
On Thursdays I post something from the archives. This is from January 2015 While I was in New York last month, I had the chance to attend two protests against police brutality and racial bias. I wanted to explain why I attended them, and what the purpose was behind them. I attended the marches because I believe that there is a pervasive pattern of overreaction and brutality against people of color. This does not mean that I think every cop is bad. My sister was a cop for many . . .
The boys visit Orlando’s Discovery Cove
Hey guys! My husband is taking over the blog today, to talk about his recent trip to Discovery Cove. Life at home can feel crazy busy trying to balancing work and family time. Due to the nature of our busy schedules and having four kids I often feel like we have to divide and conquer to maximize time with the kids. I enjoy taking the girls on daddy daughter dates as well as taking father/son adventure days with my boys. In that spirit, we've done all kinds of creative outings. However, I think . . .
