What i want you to know about adopting from China

November 13, 2013

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by Carrie. My husband and I started the process to adopt a child from China in January of 2006. At that time, we were expected to wait about 8-12 months for a referral. While we were getting our . . .

Questions of eternal significance: What’s your favorite cookbook?

November 12, 2013

Last week was my friend Sarah’s  birthday and I got her a cookbook from a restaurant we both like called True Foods. As a was buying it, the woman behind the counter told me how fast it was flying off the shelves and I decided I needed to buy one for myself.  True Food has quickly become my new favorite cookbook. It’s full of healthy foodie recipes, but also interspersed with educational essays from Dr. Andrew Weil about food and health. It’s informative and inspirational, and I’ve . . .

100 Cars for Good charity highlight: Kristie’s Foundation for Critically Ill Children

November 12, 2013

This post is sponsored by Toyota’s philanthropy program 100 Cars for Good. This month, I’m excited to be highlighting five unique charitable organizations that are making a difference in their community. Each charity was also the recipient of a new car to aid in their mission, courtesy of Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program. (Know a charity that could use a car? You can vote for them at Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good Facebook App.   Today, I’m talking with the good folks from Kristie’s . . .

The week in iphone photos

November 12, 2013

Last weekend I took a little writing/blogging retreat with a couple other bloggers. My friend Tony is an architect, and a few years ago he build a modern retreat in the mountains of Idyllwild. I’ve been wanting to visit but haven’t had the chance, so when we were looking for a spot to stay I suggested it. The place was everything I thought it would be and more . . . Tony did a great job of blending modern lines with a rustic feel.  The house is an ideal retreat center – it’s set up to . . .

Easy ways to involve kids at Thanksgiving

November 11, 2013

For a national holiday that encourages to take stock of our blessings, Thanksgiving can be fairly stressful...especially for parents. All the preparations and cooking and a more formal mealtime are not exactly kid-friendly. But gratitude isn't just for adults, and neither should Thanksgiving be an adult-only activity. Over at Babble, I’ve rounded up some easy ways to involve your kids in the Thanksgiving festivities and make the day a bit more kid-friendly. . . .

Jesus Feminist

November 9, 2013

My friend Sarah Bessey just wrote a book called Jesus Feminist. My copy arrived a few days ago and I’ve been staying up ‘till the week hours reading it . . . it’s just SO GOOD. I know that the word feminist conjures a lot of stereotypes, and even negativity for some people. But Sarah has such a kind and gentle spirit and her poetic and sincere writing sets the perfect tone for exploring how feminism and Christianity are not mutually exclusive.  I think people from all walks of life will . . .

Choreography by Karis

November 8, 2013

I just had to share this little video of Karis singing her Very Favorite Song Ever. She’s becoming quite the performer, and one of her favorite activities is to have my film her and then watch it later. She made up choreography to this song, which cracks me up. (When she holds a mic in front of her mouth, that’s her mime for the word “song” . . . even though the real lyric is “sun”). If you look closely you can see Kembe doing a little air-guitar behind her.   . . .

Glitter for Good: The 31 Bits Holiday Collection

November 8, 2013

I’ve talked about 31 Bits before, but I wanted to share about their new holiday line because it’s such a fun new look. 31 Bits helps women in Uganda earn their own living by making necklaces out of recycled paper.  I am a huge fan of 31 Bits (and not just because it was founded by some graduates of the university where I teach, and not just because the necklaces are awesome). The Holiday Collection takes their signature pieces and adds some sparkle. Kallie Dovel, one of the founders of 31 . . .

15 Awesome Celebrity Body Image Quotes

November 7, 2013

If the celebrity rags were to be believed, a woman’s worth is in her weight. From speculating on Jessica Simpson’s post-baby weight to sharing Kim Kardashian’s EXACT DIET (seriously – those words were on the cover), it seems like our celeb-obsessed culture can’t stop focusing on celebrities and their weight.  And while I don’t think that celebrities need to be our body image role models, it’s always refreshing when celebrities push back. Ovver at Babble I’ve collected a few great quotes . . .
