Wednesday’s Child: Angel, Anna, and Raina

May 29, 2014

Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

I’ve got your lifestyle blog right here

May 28, 2014

About a decade ago, I loved to scour through home design magazines for inspiration. I also bought the occasional fashion magazine. It was a guilty pleasure but also a source for ideas. I still look for inspiration, but I've replaced most of the magazines with online destinations. This seems to be a trend for most people, as most of us are just as likely to peruse Pinterest or design websites or foodie instagram accounts as we are to sit down with a magazine. The internet hasn't completed . . .

A day at the museum

May 28, 2014

This post was sponsored by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Last week the kids and I headed up to LA for the afternoon to visit the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. This is one of those local things that I have always heard about but never done. Kind of like the way I grew up in Florida and never visited the Florida Keys. As soon we got there, I felt frustrated with myself for never having taken the kids before. It's such a local gem, for both kids and adults. . . .

Questions of eternal significance: What are your favorite haircare products?

May 27, 2014

Unfortunately I was not blessed with low-maintenance hair. My hair is thick and intermittently wavy (more like wrinkled than curly) and when left to it's own devices, insanely frizzy. It's also pretty gray, which means it is wiry and brittle. (And color-treated).  As such, I'm always on the hunt for good products. First of all, pomade. I must have some kind of pomade/smoother/serum in my hair to keep it tame. I've tried numerous products of this sort and just recently found my favorite. . . .

Less Why: Thoughts on Faith | Life with Roozle "If I think about it too much, I get stuck. If I let myself wonder how anything could be true and what is true anyway and what’s the point and why does that even matter, I get so stuck. I’ve stopped letting myself think about the hard questions. Maybe just for now. Maybe for always. The last time I did this, it didn’t go so well, so I’m trying a new way. A lot less why. A lot more just go." Sarah Millican on how her night at the Baftas ended in . . .

Some mid-week joy: the Park Boulevard Bump

May 22, 2014

Thursday, amirite? Here’s a little something to infuse your almost-to-the-weekend day with some happiness. I am a sucker for corporate dancing in general and love this group, but the white guy in the middle? I just love his unexpected commitment. I truly think the key to happiness in life is finding your “thing” and doing it with gusto, and this guy is winning on both counts. . . .

Why I’m an Atheist who believes in God: A book excerpt from Frank Schaeffer

May 22, 2014

I got to meet Frank Schaeffer this past year at a writer’s retreat for Red Letter Christians. He immediately felt like a kindred spirit. We had both been raised in very conservative families, with fathers who were pillars in our respective faith communities. (Frank’s father is renowned theologian Francis Schaeffer.) We are both passionate about politics, and had a similar journey of growing disillusioned about the marriage between the Republican party and the church. Frank is a deep thinker with . . .
