Life Lately

February 15, 2021

We’ve decided to do more exploring of LA as we wait this pandemic out. (We have nothing else to do!) Last night we explored Echo Park ... we did a food crawl (empanadas and taco trucks and farmers market snacks and açaí bowls and cinnamon buns) and we wandered into book stores and sneaker shops and cursed our luck at the thrift store closing just as we arrived. Then we hit up this little spot across town for the ‘gram. What neighborhood should we explore next? View . . .

HOMELESS: THE MOTEL KIDS OF ORANGE COUNTY | ON THURSDAY’S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM AUGUST 2010.

February 11, 2021

ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM AUGUST 2010. I’m working on my syllabus this morning for a new class I’m teaching this semester.  I’ve been hunting for an HBO documentary called East of Main: Asians Aloud (which seems to be off the schedule and which I’m desperate to get my hands on, in case anyone happened to record it).  Anyways, as I was perusing their documentary listings I came across one film entitled Homeless: Motel Kids of Orange County.  As soon as I saw the . . .

Wednesday’s Child: 16-year-old Alex

February 10, 2021

Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

PARTY PLANES, PUKE FESTS, AND FONDUE FEUDS (BLOGHER DAYS 1 & 2) | ON THURSDAY’S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM AUGUST 2010.

January 28, 2021

ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM AUGUST 2010. In my life, I’ve had a couple variations of recurring stress dreams. One involves me being unable to find something right before a big event (it’s my wedding day and I can’t find a hairdryer, it’s time for prom and I can’t find my dress, etc). Another recurring dream involves me finding out that I am failing a class (in college I took an anthropology class where you could skip the final if you got 100% on the midterm. I did, . . .
