Life Lately

July 31, 2023

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Kristen Howerton (@kristenhowerton) I really fell off my book-reading habit during the pandemic, choosing to spend my days doom-scrolling instead. My daughters are running circles around me in terms of reading, and they might have shamed my book count a tiny bit (a total of 6 in 2022). I set a goal for this year to read 40 books and I'm on track so far. He's . . .

IDEAS FOR AN ETHICAL HALLOWEEN | ON THURSDAY’S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM OCTOBER 2011.

July 27, 2023

ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM OCTOBER 2011. I’ve been wanting to do a follow-up post on the connection between child slavery and chocolate.  In case you missed it, the low-down is here . . . but in a nutshell a BBC documentary revealed that child labor and even child trafficking is rampant in chocolate production, and that chocolate from most mainstream candy companies can be traced back to farms employing (and even buying) children to work in dangerous conditions.  . . .

Wednesday’s Child: Jon

July 26, 2023

Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

TWO THINGS I HOPE YOU WILL READ | ON THURSDAY’S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM OCTOBER 2011.

July 20, 2023

ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM OCTOBER 2011. I haven’t had time to write much this week.  I’d love to talk a little more about the “What To Expect When You’re Expecting A Child From An Orphanage” series Mark and I are doing at Together for Adoption this weekend.  (That’s not the real title, but it’s the gist of it).   I’d also love to write a follow-up post about some practical steps for an ethical Halloween.  I’d love to rant a bit about this mess.  But alas, I also . . .

Life Lately

July 17, 2023

last week in BeReals … I am kind of loving this app for the small perks into everyday life. No filters, no ability to game a highlight reel, just surprise snapshots of regular life.     Reunited and it feels so good! So fun watching all of the short films they made in the last few weeks. Were we 30 minutes from UC:LA but still had to stop by for a hug? Yes. Have I been stalking the instagram of @artsxpress looking for signs of Karis? Also yes. All of the kids are off doing . . .

MORE FUN WITH THE HP TOUCHSMART COMPUTER | ON THURSDAY’S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM OCTOBER 2011.

July 13, 2023

ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM OCTOBER 2011. Over the summer, HP asked if I would like to review their new TouchSmart desktop computer.  My family quickly fell in love with it, and thanks to my refusal to send it back my enthusiasm about the product, HP let us keep it a little longer.  I mentioned in my previous review that I’m a little bit Amish about kids and computers.  Yep, I’m one of those moms who thinks that the next generation is having their brains sucked out . . .
