We are still away on our Disney World binge, taking a “Good Big or Go Home” approach to the greater Orlando area. Last night we stayed at the Magic Kingdom until 2am, riding every single ride that these kids were tall enough to go on. Here’s how that ended: I’ve got a camera full of pictures and a head full of stories to share, but we’ve still got two days to go. In the meantime, check out my post over at Grey Likes Baby. I’ve been a long-tme fan of Grey Likes Baby for . . .
raising a daughter who likes sports
This post is sponsored by P&G’s ‘Thank You Mom’ campaign. My boys have a very natural affinity for all sports. Most days will find both of them in the front yard, rotating between tossing a football around, teeing off into our neighbor’s lawn, or playing handball against the garage wall. Getting them interested in sports is not something that required any effort or modeling on my behalf. With them, it’s a bigger struggle to get them to do quiet activities like drawing or . . .
disney social media moms celebration–day 1 & 2
We are having a blast here at Disney. I think my kids are still in shock about how much bigger the Disney World complex is than Disneyland in California. Our first night here, we went to a pirate party. The kids were thrilled that they got to hang with their favorite Jake and the Neverland Pirates characters. Mimi got to join us at the party. The kids were so happy to see her. The kids got to have soda. This was the highlight of their day. Our second day, . . .
getting out of the house this summer (a guide for hermit–prone moms of multiple small children)
This post is brought to you by GoGo squeeZ. When I only had a couple kids, I was pretty good at staying active and going on outings. Once my brood grew to four, it became increasingly difficult to maintain a lifestyle that involved outings. Or leaving the house. Between the potential meltdowns, the inevitable diaper blow-outs, and the mind-bogging difficulty of shuttling four kids across a parking lot with only two free hands, I settled into a routine of staying home unless I . . .
default stress, and the fleeting nature of gratitude
I'm going to reveal some not-so-flattering aspects of my personality in this post, so there is a little trepidation here . . . but maybe it will resonate with some of you. I have a really difficult time with managing my stress. Granted, I have a lot going on . . . I have several jobs and four kids, and finding the balance between those things can be difficult. It would be easy to blame my stress level on these things, but the truth I know about myself is that stress seems to be a . . .
if you love someone, set them free (a tale of three lizards)
One night last week, Mark and the boys were off at Boy Scouts, and I was home with the girls prepping for dinner. I went to rinse off some veggies in the sink, and as soon as the water came on, a lizard tried to scramble up the side of the sink. Being the calm and nondramatic person I am, I immediately jumped back and screamed bloody murder, which brought India and Karis running in to see what happened. They caught sight of the lizard and immediately starting screaming, too. Both of . . .
what I want you to know: overcoming childhood abandonment
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest post is by Elizabeth. When I was little, I longed for a ʺnormalʺ childhood. You know the kind = with 2 parents who sometimes fought, but you knew that they loved each other. The kind of life with siblings and . . .
the color run
Yesterday we took the kids to the SoCal Color Run. We heard about it from Tara Livesay, who was in town for a visit and ran it with a few friends. We were too late to buy tickets, but after watching the video we decided it might be fun to be spectators. Well . . . it was. A lot of fun. There was a “color party” at the finish line with a DJ and hundreds of people dancing and throwing color at each other. We bought several color packets and let the kids have at . . .
chimpanzee: an adoption story
We got a chance to see the new film Chimpanzee by DisneyNature, a stunning, up-close documentary that captures the life of a young chimpanzee. DisneyNature is the production company behind the documentaries Earth and Ocean. We are huge fans of nature documentaries in these parts, so I was excited to see one focusing on chimpanzees. The preview alone to this movie had me in tears, and I was curious how my kids would do with a feature-length documentary. The movie was very . . .
that’s what SHE said: quitting facebook, adoption homecomings, unconditional love, the downside of cohabitating, and more . . .
corner | Tara Whitney I once used my computer time as a way to avoid my reality and immerse myself into an entirely different one. Now, all that I want is my reality – my real, limited, fantastically beautiful and relentless life. Instead of using my computer time as a relief, I now see it as work, and I want to finish as quickly and efficiently as possible. So – how do I nurture myself? I know I am on the right track when these things are happening: I take care of myself. . . .
