A couple weeks ago I talked with my friend Sarah about my ambivalence in regards to volunteering at my kids’ school during one of our Mama Said episodes. I thought I would share the video here because I really do have some Big Feelings about it. Since filming that episode, I have volunteered a few times. (I did it out of guilt, not because I feel like the classrooms will fall apart without parental help. We attend a school where parents are very involved.) Again, I walked away . . .
the best satire reviews on amazon
There are a few things in life that make me inexplicably happy no matter what mood I’m in . . . things that restore my faith in humanity and lift my spirits regardless of what’s going on. Flashmobs are one of those things. I just grin even at the idea of random people coming together under the purpose of bringing cheer through a surprise dance. But there is another convergence of random people bringing joy that I want to talk about today: the phenomenon of satirical Amazon reviews. The comment . . .
resources for talking to kids about race and racism
On this day of celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King, I thought I would share some resources for talking to kids about racism, including both the historical context of our country as well as the present-day issues of prejudice. I am a firm believer that we should be talking to our kids about racial differences from a very young age. At a certain age, all kids are prone to leaving others out based on external factors. This can be gender, race, disability, etc. I think kids need help . . .
dishing on downton abbey: season 3 episode 3 (mo’ money, mo’ problems)
Once again, Sarah and I are chatting it up about Downton Abbey. We felt it was a darker episode. Lost letters, burning houses, sad single Edith, money issues . . . womp womp womp. I saw this picture on facebook and had to share. I had to look closely to figure out who everyone was. Why does it fill me with joy even seeing the cast in regular clothes? What did you guys think of episode 3? . . .
that’s what SHE said: faith, gender, and privilege edition
As Social Issues Drive Young From Church, Leaders Try To Keep Them | NPR "If the church was known more for our efforts to welcome the stranger than keep them out, I think the church would have greater credibility with rising generations," says Baughman. "For example, on immigration policies, we've taken the wrong stance on that, and they know. The thing is they're smart enough. A lot of them have grown up in the church and then rejected it. They've read the scriptures that talk about . . .
recycling brown bags as custom wrapping paper
I thought I would share a simple way we recycle old grocery bags in our house. I try my best to use reusable bags, but inevitably I remember them at the checkout stand with a pile full of groceries in my cart, after it’s too late to run to the car and fetch them. When this happens I ask for paper bags, and once I’m home I fold them up and stash them in a drawer. Whenever we have a birthday party to attend, I will pull one out and use it as wrapping paper, and then let the kids decorate . . .
holiday road-trip part 4: the beach tailgate
Okay, last post about our holiday vacation, and then I’m going to go take down the Christmas tree. Kidding! (We did it yesterday). We we thrilled to try out the new Town and Country during our trip to Daytona. I mentioned last week that despite being in a resort on the water, we took the car out for a spin so Mark could have the experience of driving on the sand. Well, it ended up being so convenient having our car as a home base that we did it again the next day. I love that we . . .
How I became the mother of the little girl from Good Luck Charlie (alternate title: Why children should not be on instagram)
Late last week I was sitting in line to pick up my kids when I noticed my phone alerts for instagram were coming fast and furious – a little odd since I hadn’t posted a photo in a while. When I got home, I checked instagram and noticed I had been tagged by a number of fan pages for Mia Talerico . . . the little actress who plays Charlie in the popular Disney Channel sitcom. Apparently, several of them had made the discovery that an instagram user posing as Claire Talerico, Mia ’s mom, was . . .
dishing on downton abbey, episode 2 (take 2!) . . . oh, Edith!
Okay, fellow Downton Dorks. As many of you noted, Sarah and I got our episodes confused, since we cheated and watched the British version instead of waiting for it to premiere in the US. The recap I posted on Sunday for episode 2 was actually a discussion of the 2nd half of the US premiere, since the two first British episodes were combined for us here. Anyhoo, here we are talking about episode 2, in which Edith . . . well. You know. Spoilers ahead! Once again, I was dying laughing . . .
holiday road trip, part 3: a race to the hospital
Okay, I’ve been wanting to share this part of our holiday trip, but needed to find the time and space to write it all out. As I mentioned before, my entire family (including my sisters, my mom, and 15 kids between us) drove out to Daytona to spend some time together at a resort by the beach. My sister Kim was due on December 31 but decided to go out anyway, since it was only about an hour from the hospital she where she planned to give birth. Everything was going along pretty uneventfully . . .
