First They Came For The Black People, And I Did Not Speak Out | Matt Stauffer It’s because this is what we expect. It fits our narrative of the world. Black people in urban settings fighting the police? Look at the kid they shot. His pants were sagging. He was walking in the middle of the street. Look at the interview with that guy who’s protesting–he was speaking in Ebonics. Probably didn’t even finish high school. Look! They’re looting. This is why they can’t have nice things. So when the . . .

How to get kids to pack their own lunches
This post is sponsored by Blue Diamond Almonds. Kids are picky about food. I've gone one really adventurous eater (see my #FoodieJafta tag on instagram), but for the others, pickiness seems to be an inherent trait that they were born with. We can work our way around this pickiness at home—usually—but it gets tricky at school. I remember trading lunches with other kids back when I was in school. But with teachers and cafeteria monitors walking around and a much greater sensitivity to . . .
Racial bias, police brutality, and the dangerous act of being black
Last week, an unarmed black teenager was fatally shot in Ferguson, Missouri and left to lay in the street for four hours as a community watched in horror. Tensions have mounted as police reports have varied wildly from eye-witness accounts, and that anger was fueled further as the police department refused to answer questions about his death. At this point, the police chief has back-stepped his own statement of facts, and is now unwilling to report that he knows anything definitive about this . . .

On participant ribbons and letting kids always win
I just went to a fair with my kids, where all four of them participated in a hula-hoop contest. My children are not world-class hula-hoopers. They are mediocre at best and didn't outlast the winner. It was just something fun for them to do. But guess what? They all won participant ribbons! So forever we can celebrate and remember their mediocrity at rotating a plastic hoop around their hips. Sigh. They loved the ribbons. They smiled and proudly showed them to Dad, who secretly rolled his . . .
