I wanna be in the car where it happens . . . (If you don't get that reference, you need to check your life and start listening to the Hamilton soundtrack immediately.) James Corden is my favorite ever. Except for Lin Minuel Miranda, who is my favorite ever ever. And the two of them together sent my inner broadway nerd into jazz-hand-level hysteria. They sing a number from Hamilton (which I had the pleasure of seeing last year and YES it's worth the hype.) Then they are joined by Broadway . . .
Why I’m a socialist, a Christian, and voting for Bernie Sanders
I consider myself a socialist. That's a sentence that can create awkwardness at dinner parties, and suspicion and confusion in political conversations. Socialism is a dirty word in some political circles. Case in point: think of all the times that Barrack Obama has been accused of being a socialist in the past seven years, As if that is some grave insult. Because of the stigma around socialism, it is curious to me (and encouraging to me) that Bernie Sanders, a vocal and proud socialist, has . . .

That’s what SHE said: why we marry wrong, the truth about aging, the struggle for optimism, 19 things about adoption, the Stanford victim’s powerful letter to her attacker and more…
WHY YOU WILL MARRY THE WRONG PERSON | nytimes.com An interesting, slightly cynical look at what really drives that feeling of "knowing it's right' when we meet Mr. or Mrs. Right..."But though we believe ourselves to be seeking happiness in marriage, it isn’t that simple. What we really seek is familiarity — which may well complicate any plans we might have had for happiness. We are looking to recreate, within our adult relationships, the feelings we knew so well in childhood. The love most of . . .

#TBT: The lengths I will go to in order to avoid making a phone call
On Thursdays I post something from the archives. This is from July 2011. I've been wanting to get a piano for our house for almost a year now. We previously had a baby grand but it took up too much space, so we sold it and then my plan was to replace it with an upright. But Craig's List . . . it's just so much work with the calling and the appointment-making. Finally, this week I found a piano at a local thrift store. Only $99! It's really plain but that's what I . . .
Wednesday’s Child: Seth
Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

Summer self-care goals
I've talked before about how self-care can be a difficult thing for me. "Self-care" sound like such a frivolous thing, especially to someone like me. I struggle with perfectionism and caretaking for others, so self-care can feel self indulgent and unnecessary. But I am realizing, more and more, that self-care is actually a vital ingredient in me being a good writer, a good mother, and a healthy person. It is something I am trying to take seriously this year. As such, I've made some goals for . . .
