Countdown to July 4th
We are preparing for 4th of July around here. Our neighborhood has a huge block party, and we live in a ghetto city were fireworks are legal, so after the kids have a parade and we stuff our faces, the adults put on a fireworks show right outside our house. Jafta was really excited about the party last year. That is, until the fireworks started. Then he started screaming like a caged animal. He was SO freaked out. We had to go inside, but I must admit, even with the doors closed, our house . . .
The Dummy Mouse
No, I'm not calling India a dummy. I'm referring to the "computer" I rigged up for my daughter, who really wants to play computer games like her big brother. However, every time I let her sit down to the computer, she would bang on the keys and move the mouse like a toy car, which usually resulted in opening files, prompting printer boxes, and any other number of right-click functions that threatened to crash the computer. Not to mention, her brother didn't like being kicked off his game only to . . .
The Memory-Keeper’s Son
I just looked at Jafta's baby book for the first time since we finalized his adoption. I hadn't really thought about looking at it - India just pulled it out. But as I sat there flipping the pages, I was flooded with memories of assembling it. Making a baby book is something that should be a labor of love for a mom, especially a first-time mom. Choosing memories for a baby book should be a beautiful thing. But for me, this book was an EXTREMELY painful process. In fact, I could barely finish it, . . .
Fun with Hand-Me-Downs
India has been blessed with lots of amazing hand-me-downs. The one I put on her today was kinda funny. It is a Hawaiian print halter top (cropped) that ties in the back with a big bow. It has matching gaucho pants and both are trimmed in eyelet lace. I can't decide if it is totally cute, or really tacky. I think she's rockin' it, but I also think it could be obnoxious. Mark said the same thing when he came home and saw her. He took one look and said, "wow, um, what's up with this outfit?" "I . . .
You Know You Are an Adoptive Parent If. . .
I just saw this on another blog and it rings so true for us. You Know You're An Adoptive Parent IF... 1. The fact that there are 143 million children without a parent to kiss them goodnight has made you lose sleep. 2. You realize DNA has nothing to do with love & family. 3. You can't watch Adoption Stories on TLC without tears. 4. The fact that, if 7% of Christians adopted 1 child there would be no orphans in the world, is convicting to you. 5. You spend free time surfing blogs about . . .
The Myth of the Colorblind Kid
DEF: xenophopbia [zen-uh-foh-bee-uh] noun : a fear of that which is unknown, typically used to describe general dislike of people different from oneself. I used to like the idea that kids are colorblind. I love the vision of American being this great melting pot where kids of every race play together in perfect harmony. I think we are getting there. But as my kids are getting older, I've begun to realize that children do, in fact, notice race. I've even had the sinking feeling as I've observed . . .
The Voracious Reader
I accidentally left a board book in India's crib last night. This morning, I woke up to find her in the crib, nibbling away. She had already eaten through three pages. She loves her some cardboard. Mark's take: "I wouldn't say she is as avid a reader as her mommy, but she does devour her books". . . .
Unwelcome Guest
Turns out we did bring a little guy home from Haiti. But not the one we hoped. This little parasite's name is Giuardiasis. We call him Gordy for short. He has been making his presence known for a few weeks, and the doctors confirmed it yesterday. In fact - a whole slew of doctors. Turns out our family has sparked many a consultation at our local medical group. Prescriptions have been filled. Pills have been taken. We wait expectantly for our tummies to respond. Gordy, buddy, it's been . . .
India on Percussion
Now it's India's turn. She shows a lot of promise until her noisemakers get tangled up. . . .
