iphone photo dump 3/26/12

March 26, 2012

Cousin Tanner’s birthday party was on St. Patrick’s Day, so in the morning we had some eggs fortified with green food dye before we headed out the festivities. We were also forced to leave chocolate in a leprechaun trap, because the night prior all of the children were acting like it was Christmas Eve, and apparently their childhood dreams would have been shattered had we not complied.  To whatever mother decided that St. Patrick’s had to be yet another holiday where I have to craft . . .

required reading on the killing of trayvon martin

March 24, 2012

Several weeks ago, I linked to the news story of Trayvon Martin in a post I wrote about racial ascriptions vs. descriptions.  I was shocked by the story, but I tried to temper my outrage until I learned more. Honestly, a part of me didn’t mention it again because I was sincerely hoping that somehow details would emerge that would prove that there was more to the story than a neighborhood vigilante who thought that a black teen in a hoodie was suspicious enough to follow with a loaded gun. I . . .

s#!t people say to transracial families

March 23, 2012

So . . . let’s say that HYPOTHETICALLY a fellow adoptive mom and I were brainstorming for a little video spinoff of the “S#!t People Say” meme, focused around crazy things people say to transracial families.  What are some of the things we should include?  Beyond the typical, “How much did he cost” or “Are they all your kids” questions . . . what other funny, clueless, or misguided things do people say to transracial families or interracial couples? . . .

what I want you to know: self-inflicters don't need your shock and judgment

March 21, 2012

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face.  If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by an anonymous reader. I am a recovering self-inflicter.  Even typing that anonymously in a public forum  I hesitate,  having to force myself not to go back and erase it lest someone . . .

tips for cleaning with small children

March 21, 2012

My kids are finally getting to an age where they can help me with cleaning. It's sometimes difficult to get them to help in ways that actually make a difference. Sometimes they are more "moving dirt around" than actually cleaning, but I want to get them in the habit now so that it's easier later. Here are some of the ways we enlist the kids in our cleaning routines now. Use a chore chart. I like using reward systems for kids. We have a reward chart where the kids have an opportunity to earn . . .

in which I tell you how much I loved the hunger games movie (a spoiler-safe review)

March 20, 2012

Well, friends, I had the thrilling experience of being invited to a screening of the Hunger Games movie in LA today, and I am here to tell you, it did not disappoint. But before I get into a movie review, can I just say how much I loved the comments on yesterday’s post?  It’s so fascinating to see how differently people interpreted the book, the ending, and the motivations of the characters  Plus, it’s comforting to know that there are a whole bunch of other women in a similar . . .

we need to talk about the hunger games

March 19, 2012

It’s almost a little embarrassing to admit how engrossed I got in the Hunger Games book series.  I suppose it would be slightly less embarrassing if the series were in a section other than “young adult literature” . . . but I’m comforted with the knowledge that I am not the only 30-something who went off the deep end for a few days, not sleeping and ignoring my children to finish these books. I can’t remember the last time I was so obsessed with the book that I was willing to forego . . .

that’s what SHE said: medicating ADHD, warlords, micro-aggressions, the state of education, the brevity of life, and more . . .

Michael Ian Black: | Despicable We Rarely do we know more about each other than the public faces we present to the world. The private person can be very different. The question I’ve been asking myself, though, is which is the “real” person? It’s a question I’ve been asking about a lot of people during this horrible political season we’re experiencing, in particular myself. fashionista

March 17, 2012

Karis loves to dress herself, and she was quite proud of this ensemble.  It’s pink leggings, with a red tank top of India’s followed by an inside-out leotard of an entirely different shade of pink (complete with awkward nude lining).  She asked me to take a picture, and made this pose.  “I’m showing that I’m SO STRONG.” Work it, girl. . . .

what does jason russell’s meltdown mean for the #kony2012 movement?

March 16, 2012

I was a bit shocked today to see the announcement of Jason Russell’s detainment for alleged public intoxication and masturbation [edited to add: recent reports indicate he was naked but not masturbating].  It’s all over twitter so I can only imagine it will be all over the news tonight.  My first response was frustration – this guy is obviously putting his credibility in major jeopardy, not to mention the entire #Kony2012 movement that has already been under such intense scrutiny. My . . .
