We’ve talked a lot on our podcast about the importance of voting, and we are huge advocates of voting as a means to use your voice and effect change. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, more voters used absentee ballots than in past elections. Most voters expect to have an officially certified winner of the presidential election within three days of the election. A longer-than-expected wait for results can breed distrust in the election. But it’s important to note that it takes election officials longer to verify and count absentee ballots than votes cast by electronic voting machines because they need extra time to double check that those ballots have been verified and counted before announcing a result. Every eligible voter should have their voice heard and their vote counted. It has taken longer to count the votes and verify a winner in this year’s election — and that’s okay.
