Life Lately

November 27, 2023

An international Thanksgiving with a welcoming group of expats and locals in Valencia. We showed up as strangers but left as friends, and we might have gotten a heavy press to move to Valencia. I can’t blame their passion. It’s beautiful here. Thank you @hi_vlc_expats_in_spain for an amazing night. If you pour soda and ice into red wine at home, it’s trashy. If it’s called Tinto de Verano at a restaurant in Barcelona, it’s fancy. I don’t make the rules. I got to visit these two cuties at . . .

REQUIRED READING ON THE KILLING OF TRAYVON MARTIN | On THURSDAY’S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM MARCH 2012.

November 23, 2023

On THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM MARCH 2012. Several weeks ago, I linked to the news story of Trayvon Martin in a post I wrote about racial ascriptions vs. descriptions.  I was shocked by the story, but I tried to temper my outrage until I learned more. Honestly, a part of me didn’t mention it again because I was sincerely hoping that somehow details would emerge that would prove that there was more to the story than a neighborhood vigilante who thought that a black teen . . .

Wednesday’s Child: Hagan is still waiting

November 22, 2023

Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

S#!T PEOPLE SAY TO TRANSRACIAL FAMILIES | ON THURSDAY’S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM MARCH 2012.

November 16, 2023

ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM MARCH 2012. So . . . let’s say that HYPOTHETICALLY a fellow adoptive mom and I were brainstorming for a little video spinoff of the “S#!t People Say” meme, focused around crazy things people say to transracial families.  What are some of the things we should include?  Beyond the typical, “How much did he cost” or “Are they all your kids” questions . . . what other funny, clueless, or misguided things do people say to transracial families . . .

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE HUNGER GAMES | ON THURSDAY’S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM MARCH 2012.

November 9, 2023

ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM MARCH 2012. It’s almost a little embarrassing to admit how engrossed I got in the Hunger Games book series.  I suppose it would be slightly less embarrassing if the series were in a section other than “young adult literature” . . . but I’m comforted with the knowledge that I am not the only 30-something who went off the deep end for a few days, not sleeping and ignoring my children to finish these books. I can’t remember the last time I . . .

TIPS FOR PREVENTING EATING DISORDERS IN CHILDREN | ON THURSDAY’S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM MARCH 2012.

November 2, 2023

ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM MARCH 2012. My friend Irvina founded an incredible organization called Rewrite Beautiful, a revolution to change how girls see beauty in themselves.  Rewrite Beautiful goal is to change girls from viewing their worth in the superficial for the prevention of eating disorders.  Their vision is to build a nation of girls who don’t focus on their bodies, but rather their unique gifts and talents.  In Irvina’s words, “We want girls to focus on . . .

Life Lately

October 30, 2023

Loved seeing our friend @nathanbroxton in Raisin in the Sun at @southcoastrep today! If you are local it’s a must-see.   Homecoming fun! I love that their school lets kids get involved in so many ways. Each class does their own half-time dance (india choreographed hers and convinced Kembe to join!) Jafta sang the anthem with his alumni choir. Karis cheered and also did the freshman dance and Kembe was on court. Love watching them do their stuff. I decided to try to be fancy and . . .
