ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM NOVEMBER 2011. Recently I’ve been reading Claire Ortiz’s new book called Twitter for Good, which is full of stories about how twitter has impacted the world. I know a lot of people view social media as a trivial distraction. Some might even think it’s an exercise in narcissism. I get that. Sometimes it is. But sometimes, social media can be used to do amazing things. In my own life, I’ve seen social media used as a medium . . .
Wednesday’s Child: Damien
Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .
Life Lately
Another family from the kids’ school is traveling Europe this week as well. The mom and I schemed a surprise to have the kids “run into each other” at dinner. It was the perfect timing for my kids to have a non-sibling to chat with. A dinner and a last sunset swim wrapped up our time here. On to Rome! Happy Father’s Day to Wayne Lowen, my dad and this family’s patron saint of the travel bug we all share. He humored me when, at 16, I said that for my birthday I wanted to fly to Haiti and visit . . .

ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM OCTOBER 2011. I’ve been wanting to do a follow-up post on the connection between child slavery and chocolate. In case you missed it, the low-down is here . . . but in a nutshell a BBC documentary revealed that child labor and even child trafficking is rampant in chocolate production, and that chocolate from most mainstream candy companies can be traced back to farms employing (and even buying) children to work in dangerous . . .

MORE FUN WITH THE HP TOUCHSMART COMPUTER | ON THURSDAY’S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM OCTOBER 2011.
ON THURSDAY'S I POST FROM THE VAULT. THIS POST IS FROM OCTOBER 2011. Over the summer, HP asked if I would like to review their new TouchSmart desktop computer. My family quickly fell in love with it, and thanks to my refusal to send it back my enthusiasm about the product, HP let us keep it a little longer. I mentioned in my previous review that I’m a little bit Amish about kids and computers. Yep, I’m one of those moms who thinks that the next generation is having their brains sucked out . . .
