The time my kids did my makeup for a Buzzfeed video

November 17, 2014

Last week a friend of mine who works for Buzzfeed asked if my kids and I wanted to take part in a video they were making. I love Buzzfeed videos. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. If my kids ever feel like I embarrass them on the internet, vengeance is theirs today. . . .

That’s what SHE said: Our mommy problem, prostitution solutions, adoption truths, and more . . .

November 16, 2014

Born Again | Mamalode I would agonize over my intense and pointless guilt. Why hadn’t I found her sooner? She would dwell on the anger of my having not carried her inside of me. She had replaced her birth mother with me, and I could also be replaced. I could leave her, but she would try and leave me first. I would hold her closer the further she pulled away until she would finally break in half; the release, the fear and happiness all mixed together in a messy and desperate cry. The Avon World . . .

“It’s only hair” and other lies

November 14, 2014

This post is sponsored by Hairfinity. "It's only hair" is an adage spoken only by a person who has never really had a bad haircut. Confession: I have been in various stages of growing my bangs out since age 12. My mom was rather liberal in the hair department and basically gave me free reign to do whatever I wanted to it: Sun-In, perms, cutting it myself . . . it was open season at my house. I spent many a Saturday giving myself or my friends perms, and I was always hacking away at my own . . .

#TBT: What am I doing wrong here?

November 13, 2014

On Thursdays I post a favorite from the archives. This is from April 2008. There are so many days where, as a mom, I feel completely unequipped. I am often looking around and feeling like I am the ONLY mom fumbling this much and in so much chaos. I am the mom who forgets water bottles at playgroup, who forgets sunscreen at the beach, who forgets to pack lunch for preschool, who forgets the helmet at the skate park. I try very hard to overcompensate for this by being "intentionally organized". . . .

This is a letter I wrote to the man who kept me in an abusive relationship and got me pregnant, the man who almost destroyed my life. It's what I want you to know about . . .

DIY Thanksgiving “Gratitude Board”

November 11, 2014

This post was sponsored by Ford. Last Thanksgiving my sister-in-law hosted us for the day, and she created a little gratitude experience by making an interactive bulletin board. She had little slips of paper that everyone could write things they were thankful for. It was a really meaningful exercise and a great visual reminder of all of our blessings. It was also the perfect way to get the kids involved in thinking through what they are grateful for. I decided to try to recreate this . . .

On celebrating adoption and recognizing loss on #WorldAdoptionDay

November 10, 2014

November is National Adoption Month, and as such, I've been seeing some new movements on social media surrounding adoption. Yesterday, I posted about the #flipthescript movement, in which adoptees are attempting to raise their voices in the conversation around adoption, which is so often dominated by adoption agencies and adoptive parents. I linked out to the writings of several adoptees who wrote honest and sometimes painful accounts about being adopted, and I also featured a video of adoptees . . .
