Just had to share some of the amazing inspiring essays my children have been turning in. #teenagersinquarantine #wasteoftime #burningtrench

This address from Dr. Emily Landon is hands-down the best explanation I’ve seen on the need for sheltering-in-place. Full of facts but also reassuring. Watch it with your kids. Share it with your friends. Let’s just stop covering the president’s addresses altogether. Emily is our president now.

About an hour before this lovely dinner scene I was hiding in my room bawling my eyes out. Is anyone else finding their emotions in a pendulum swing? I have moments of absolute terror, when I start wondering how long this will last or what happens with my asthma if I get infected, what my finances will look like in a few months, etc. In other moments I have this overwhelming peace and even gratitude for this season of slowing down and family togetherness. I feel more bonded to my kids than ever. We have developed lovely new routines that never would have happened otherwise, like playing songs for each other after dinner and sitting longer at the table because we have no where to be. My heart is bursting with love but then my brain is beset with anxiety. I vascilate from anger to worry to warm and fuzzy multiple times a day. I know some of this is the wrestling inherent in finding a new normal, grieving losses, but then also trying to find the unexpected gifts.

Social distancing at the beach ….

Well, we got through our first day of “quarantine homeschool.”. After a very unstructured weekend that was devolving into bickering I decided to really structure their day, dictating time and even seating placement for each subject (I created “stations” around the house to keep them seperate for chunks of the day and to also keep them from sitting in the same place all day). It was effective but they are asking for a little more autonomy tomorrow. They all enjoyed Masterclass the most (Karis took a class on neutral makeup from Bobbi Brown and then applied it to herself. India is taking a photography class with Fran Lebowitz.) Each of the kids learned a song during music and played it after dinner (this was my favorite part.) They did some laps around the block for PE. They felt the Crash Course videos were too easy so tomorrow I’m going to have them do some history lessons on Khan academy instead. I think it went about as well as it could have. We got notice today that our school district went on full shut-down and the distance learning plans that were supposed to start next week are now “TBD” so I’m glad we’re getting this structure in place because I think we could be here for a while. It’s trial and error and I don’t know what I’m doing but we are adjusting as we go . Thank God for the internet.

Playdates with the neighbors, social-distancing style. @cleezy
