Does Frozen feature Disney’s first animated gay couple?

February 18, 2014

Our family has seen Frozen several times but Mark and I have not seen it together. I saw it first with the girls, and then Mark took the kids one day while I was working. When he came back, he said, “I can’t believe they had a gay couple in the movie!” And I was like . . . huh? What are you talking about? I don’t remember tat and I would remember that. Mark was sure that when the shopkeeper of Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post and Sauna points to the sauna and says, “Hey family!”, that he was pointing to his husband and kids. I disagreed, because I assumed he referred to them as “family” generically (like the plural of “hey, girl”). But more than that, I didn’t believe him because I thought a gay couple in a Disney movie would, sadly,  provoke the Boycott Heard Round the World. I didn’t think it was true because I knew there would have been backlash and public outcry. The #StandwithPhil folks would surely have rallied with petitions and posts. I saw the movie again, and was sure to pay closer attention. (In part because my husband texted me saying, “Look for the family in the hot tub” on my way to the theater. We might be a little serious about proving ourselves right in this relationship.)  And . . . when I saw it, I assumed that the girl to the right of the man was his wife. Sure, she’s tiny compared to the man and her eyes are big and child-like. But this is Disney – that’s how most women are drawn. But then . . . yesterday I read an article talking about how Frozen as the most progressive Disney movie yet, and it pointed to the gay shopkeeper and his family as an example. So, perhaps other people are seeing it, too? What do you think? Are the people in the hot tub Oaken’s partner and kids? Did Disney just pull a stealthy sneak? Image Credit: Tumblr

The family of looks like a grown man and a grown woman with 3 children. The man looks like a broad chested man and the woman, just like most Disney movies, is a dainty and petite compared to the man.

Also, I assumed the guy could have been a brother. Not everyet time someone says my family do they mean my husband and children.

All in all I don't see it.

I have seen Frozen a gazillion times at this point and I NEVER thought of Oaken's "family" in that way. I immediately assumed the female on the right was his wife and the big guy in the middle was his big burly son.

    I saw this too yesterday.
    Disney is evil.
From this to Elsas transformation from lady to slut.
The song synching to describe it. It's nefarious.

I have watched this movie at home hundreds of times and actually just noticed this the other day. That's when I went on Google to see if anyone else had noticed it as well. I couldn't believe it!
