I have enjoyed using my neti pot ever since Dr. Oz and Oprah told me I should be doing it. (Because I do whatever Oprah tells me I should do). I gotta tell you, though, if you haven’t tried it, you should. It’s amazingly refreshing. And did I mention OPRAH does it?
So anyway, I’ve been deaing with a nasty cold for weeks now, and yesterday I was looking forward to giving the system a little flush. Jafta was at preschool, and India was hanging out with me in the bathroom. I prepared my pot, tilted my head, and got a good little stream going, when suddenly India got a glimpse of what I was doing and started SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER.
It was horrific. No parent ever wants to think about what their child would look like if they were witness to an act of violence. And yet, that is exactly what India looked like. I might as well have been gauging my eyes out, the way she was screaming. She was also yelling “NO, MOMMY NO!!! DON’T DO IT!!!” through her screams. She was completely and totally traumatized. I had to spend the next half hour comforting her, calming her down, and assuring her that I was not hurt. And then she followed me around like a mother bear following her cub, making sure that I didn’t try any of that funny business again.
So, lesson learned. In the future, my Neti Pot use will be behind closed doors.

what the H? is a neti pot? i’m so 1992.
That picture pretty much sums it up. You pour water into one side of your nose and it drains out the other. It’s like a bad youth group trick that actually has some useful effects.
You should get one. All the cool kids are going neti.
good lord… i’ve never heard of it either. but i’ve had a nasty cold and cough… NASTY… so i’d be willing to try anything.
one more thing India will discuss in therapy…
Neti Pots rock the Casbah. Actually, I use a sinu-rinse bottle thingy. More pressure.
But, alas, even though my kids are out of the screamfest from such things, none of them can stand to watch me do it (except for my very analytical son who wants to know what it feels like, what’s the appropriate angle, if I change the amount of pressure will my brains come out with it – that sort of thing).
I have heard lots of good things about this but have never tried it. Poor India though; she must have been thinking “why is my mom hurting herself”. I hope she got over it quickly.
I have never heard of a Neti pot…I am looking forward to my next cold to try it out!
gosh. thats too funny! thanks for the laugh 🙂
Wish I could try that on my little one- he’s had a nasty cold for weeks now and I’d love to clean out his little sinuses. But since he’s only about 1 we won’t even go there. Yeah. I’m sure that would go over real well.
I love my neti pot, and I torture my children by using it on them. It’s saved Caleb from at least 4 sinus infections. Poor India. I miss that little cutie!
I love mine too….it’s not just for when you have a cold though. It’s a good thing to do on a regular basis, especially if you deal with allergies etc.
I think it’s a strange feeling, the strangest, but I LOVE how it feels after.
Very funny story. I think I have to agree with India though…it is a little odd… 🙂
this post cracked me up! i too love my neti pot, and i’ll have to file away this helping parenting tip:)
