Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie. A poetic and philosphical exploration of the class system in India, full of thick metaphor, obscure allegory, and deep political and religious underpinnings. The divergent writing style, heady vocabulary, and constantly shifting plot points are making this a very hard read. (book club is on Sunday, and I’m 166 pages in of this 525 page book).
What I’d like to be reading:
The Twighlight Series. Mindless, young adult fiction about a virtuous young woman and a mysterious hottie vampire. Full of suspense and forbidden romance. Every person I know is reading this, talking about this, staying up all night to finish this. I’m tired and nauseas, and it sounds like just what the doctor ordered. I have all four books of this series sitting on my nighstand, mocking me as I sift through this heavy and tedious Rushdie book.
OMG! Every teen at my high school is reading/has read Twilight. All four books should take you about three hours to read. (But Edward IS hot, although I’m partial to Jacob.)
Life is short. Dump the Rushdie. heheheheheheh

I read Twilight because I was curious about the hype. I won’t give anything away, but the writing was dreadful and the “romance” was…disfunctional…which really makes me wonder why so many teen girls are so enthralled. He’s very controlling and she’s a mess. (Yes, we get it, she’s clumsy…but every time she fell down I wanted to pitch the book in the corner.) It was more about “obsession” than “love”. It did make for a great conversation with my 12yod about what is and isn’t attractive in the opposite sex…and how it’s unhealthy to lose your identity to be with someone else.

Rushdie is definitely not for the faint of heart. His books are work. You feel all smart, though, when you’re done…even if you don’t understand half of what you read.

I mean Kristen, is this what this has come to? You should really start taking my advice as soon as i give it to you! you could be the happiest camper EVER. PLUS you must read it before the end of the month, cause the movie is coming out and Jenn and I can’t go alone in our twilight t-shirts
LOL, I didn’t finish the Rushdie when my book group was studying it. I’ve read all four Twilight books though.
Ditch the book club!! Who picks this stuff anyway? Life is too short to be reading what you don’t want to–or doing things you don’t want to. It’s my new philosophy–and my house is a mess!! Who cares? I am feeling more relaxed than ever!
