random bullets coming at you (and a refrigerator giveaway)

January 9, 2013

  • I’ve been meaning for years to write some suggestions for people who ask me for advice about international adoption. Well, my friend Jillian Lauren just did it for me. Will now forward all inquiries to the wisdom she imparts in this post.
  • I’m going to be speaking at a few events in the coming months. At the end of January, I will be speaking at the Dad.2 Summit in Houston, TX. Mark will be there and is speaking as well. I will also be at Killer Tribes in Atlanta in March. I’ve heard great things about this blogging conference and the line-up includes several of my favorite writers so I’m thrilled to be involved.
  • I am doing a juice cleanse this week with Nekter Juicebar, in an effort to get back on track after a season of travel and poor eating. I’m on day 2 and so far, so good.

  • I discovered this yesterday via Jason Boyett and it makes me very, very happy. Who wants to join me in creating an Orange County walk-dancing chapter?

  • Rachel Held Evans is one of my favorite faith bloggers, and she’s doing a sexuality series on her blog this year.  Rachel is smart and provocative and this is sure to be interesting for people of faith.
  • If you’re a music geek like me and have wondered how to introduce the symphony to kids, check out LA Phil’s concert, Sinaisky Conducts The Planets happening this weekend at Disney’s REDCAT in LA. There is a post-event afterwards where guests can view the stars and planets through sidewalk telescopes.

  • One of my new favorite tumblr sites is called The Reconstructionists. It’s a collaboration between illustrator Lisa Congdon and writer Maria Popova celebrating women: artists, writers, and scientists, as well as notable unsung heroes — who have changed the way we define ourselves as a culture and live our lives as individuals of any gender. Every Monday they publish an illustrated portrait of one such woman, along with a hand-lettered quote that captures her spirit and a short essay about her life and legacy.
  • Last but not least: I’m partnering with Whirlpool on a twitter event next week, and one lucky participant will win a new Whirlpool refrigerator with a water filtration system! There will be other fun prizes as well. To join the conversation, long into twitter on January 16th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST and follow the hashtag #FilterFresh.
