what i want you to know: I’m Catholic and I like it.

December 4, 2013

What I Want You to Know is a series of
reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their
personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the
unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to
this series,

What I want you to know is what it is really like being Catholic.

I
grew up in the midwest in a large Catholic family. We moved to the East
Coast when I was in high school, and throughout school I went to public
and Catholic schools: Boston College, which is Catholic, for my BA and MA. I did finance undergrad but went back to get my MA (and almost
finished my PhD before I had kids) in philosophy.

I find a lot of
ignorance in the general population about us! Especially in academia,
but even my in-laws are pretty unclear about why we do certain things.
And I am about to tell the world I am pregnant with baby #4, which on
the East Coast puts you in the officially crazy category.

Even
though I am a strong Catholic, I still look at the clock to see if it is
drinking time, love to laugh at comedians, and appreciate a good pair
of shoes as much as the next gal. It is funny that at the heart of
Catholicism is love, not unlike Buddism, but it garners so much hate.
