Back to School 2026

September 1, 2026

Welp. It’s the end of an era. The last first day of hugh school for the Howerton clan as Karis marches towards senior year. I’m excited to watch her experience all of the milestones of her last year of high school, but also a little emotional as well.

The following week the college kids had their first day of sophomore and senior year. We moved India back to Claremont this weekend in a sweltering heat wave. This year was less emotional as I said goodbye to her surrounded by friends, as opposed to walking into orientation where she knew no one last year. Still, home does not feel the same without her and I’ve been tearing up a couple times a day. I’m not sure I ever posted about this but last year, Jafta made the decision to transfer to Vanguard after his first semester at CalState DH. It was not a great fit – housing was rough, administration was worse. That’s probably a post for another time. But the move to Vanguard feels right. He and Kembe are both living at home since the school is walking distance, and both are working on a combined degree and teaching credential. It’s funny because my kids could not be at more different schools philisophically. India’s school is incredibly liberal, with rainbow flags and Free Palestine signs all over the campus. My boys are at a school with required Bible classes and chapel. We contain multitudes! But what these schools have in common is smaller class sizes, low teacher-student ratios, a size that allows for a more “high-touch” experience, and professors who care deeply about their students. I feel good about where they are at, and incredibly proud of them!
