Life Lately

May 2, 2022

First conference in over two years! I took for granted this community of women that I would gather with several times a year at various events and conferences. It was good to be back. @mom2summit

Yesterday I had the chance to speak about mental health, kids, and social media alongside Frances Haugen (Facebook’s whistleblower), Dr. Shapiro from AltaMed and Dalia Hashad, the badass behind advocacy group @parentstogether. I don’t think it’s a secret that social media has very adverse affects on the mental health of teens. And while there is much that parents can do to mitigate this, the point we stressed in this panel is that this is a community/societal issue, and a public mental health crisis, not something that should be left to parents to navigate individually. Tech companies KNOW that this is a problem, have the technology to make things safer, and yet they don’t. We need to hold them accountable. I will be talking about this more in the future but in the meantime check out @parentstogether and join them – they’ve made incredible policy changes already and are a good place to step into this conversation. @mom2summit

Happy birthday to my creative, stylish, witty, smart, loyal, kind, sarcastic and silly 13-year-old. I love you. Even though you stick your tongue out every time I try to take your picture. 🙄😜

Okay, let’s talk about not-toxic faith. It’s been a few years (okay more than a few) since I’ve done a daily devotional. No doubt a needed rebellion from a faith tradition that told me that a specific routine of morning “quiet time” was the hallmark of a healthy life, to the point where “how is your quiet time?” became a litmus test for whether or not you were really walking with the Lord (and if not, the explanation for anything that was wrong in your life). I stepped out of this and it was needed, but I do recognize the value of a daily meditation. I am really loving this guide from my friend @katecbowler, which is, as @byjeffchudescribed, “ A devotional for those of us who can’t stand devotionals.” Kate has taught me so much in her writings over the past few years and this collection of wisdom is smart, hopeful, and often hilarious. https://amzn.to/38es2V6
