In stories I’m sharing the KN95 masks we’ve been wearing, and also talked about the surge happening here in our community, which sparked a convo about COVID shame (especially for folks that have been really careful thus far and are catching it anyway.) It seemed to resonate with a lot of folks. Sharing some of those responses in my stories as well.

We saw few of the shows we originally had tickets for on this trip. We watched cancellation after cancellation happen. The upside is that we ended up seeing some other shows we wouldn’t otherwise have seen.
Caroline or Change – We saw an understudy for the lead and she was so amazing that after one of her songs, she got an extended standing ovation that stopped the show. I really love this musical. It’s different – it’s written more like a straight play. It’s a character study as well as a study of class and privilege. It’s not action-packed or a sweeping romance. It’s about small shifts in power dynamics. The music was incredible and it’s worth seeing just for the vocals.
Freestyle Love Supreme – I expected to laugh and have fun. I did not expect to be taken to church and brought to tears by a freestyle rap about a single mom singing gospel in the car with her kids. @jmiglehart brought the audience into a tender and vulnerable part of his life and it was such an amazing moment of humanity to watch. Another well-deserved standing ovation. Wish I’d seen this show sooner, and a few more times. If it tours near you, go.
Kimberly Akimbo – I saw the original straight version of this play about 20 years ago and found it just okay. But Jeanine Tesori (composure of Fun Home) wrote this into a musical and @alphamom and @lauramayes both recommended this, and they have never steered me wrong. (Ok . One time they did). I loved this play. Loved. Such a great human story. Hilarious and poignant with great music.
To Kill a Mockingbird – This was Aaron Sorkin’s take on the classic and this was absolutely incredible. The staging and the script were both so good and we got to see Jeff Daniel’s. The script did such a good job of pushing forward those critical questions around giving grace and patience to oppressors, and how that can harm those they oppress. (Continued in comments)

We rode citibikes across the Brooklyn Bridge today. The cold air and clunky bikes almost did us in. Do not recommend. 😬 But the view from the other side was beautiful.
Lunch in Little Italy, afternoon spent shopping in Soho, and dinner in Chinatown. 🇮🇹🇺🇸🇨🇳
Central Park and MoMA today. And @aus_rivers for company!
