I have always been a curator. Ever since I was small, I loved keeping records of memories. I was a stellar diary-keeper and an impeccable pen-pal. I saved everything. I made books and collages and loved hanging pictures in my room. Eventually, I became a scrap-booker . . . keeping detailed books full of photos, ticket stubs, and other momentos.
I’m pretty good at capturing photos of my kids. I have to admit, though, that I’m NOT so good at capturing video. It’s funny, because my grandfather was the king of home movies. We used to watch hours and hours of (silent) home movie footage from the 70’s – us baking cookies or doing dances. Unfortunately, I tend to forget about switching the camera to video mode. And while I love capturing photos, there is something so fun about hearing my kids’ voices on video . . . especially when they are past that stage.
There is a new app that I am really digging that encourages parents to capture video snapshots of their kids. OneDay is a company focused on helping parents tell their family stories in unique ways. Their app helps you make movies of children in seconds with holiday themes, thought-provoking questions, and fun story set. Here’s one I made of India on Thanksgiving:
What I love about this app is that there is no editing required. I just followed the prompts, read the questions and filmed her, and then the app stitched it together, adding the captions and music automatically.

The OneDay app has great holiday themes, fun for documenting that time but also great for sharing with relatives who are far away on special days. They’ve also got great prompts for recording little slices of a child’s age and stage. I’m looking forward to making more movies, and hopeful that this app will give me the inspiration I need to remember to capture video of my kids on a regular basis.
