Life Lately

Obligatory Times Square photo

A lovely day exploring Little Island, Chelsea Market, and the Highline.

India’s travel outfit yesterday was fashion goals but also probably could have gotten her access to work with the flight maintenance crew.

After a lot of pivoting, stressing, and hand-wringing, we arrived in New York just in time for a Christmas dinner of takeout pizza. This long-planned trip, along with a number of broadway play tickets, was supposed to be our ā€œbig giftā€ this year and I’ve been planning it for months. We’re staying in a beautiful home in Tribeca while another family is in our house. As omicron descended on NYC I watched several of our intended shows get canceled, and worried about traveling with the risk of this very infectious variant. We considered canceling, but already had people in our house (they arrived earlier while the kids were at Mark’s and I vacated to a hotel.) I couldn’t displace the family in our house, which left us either still going to NYC where we had free lodging, or scrambling to find an affordable AirBNB last-minute in SoCal that could fit all of us during Christmas week. That proved near-impossible. The home-swap thing has been an amazing experience so far but this is one of the drawbacks of doing it non-simultaneously… if something goes wrong, you can’t just go home. So we decided we’d still go, but readjust our expectations for the trip. It won’t be a broadway extravaganza. We will enjoy the outdoor stuff the city has to offer, and our dinner reservations will be replaced with takeout meals. But we are here, together, and after an insane week and more than one canceled flight in the past 24 hours, we will take it. Now give me all of your best outdoor ideas for this city! We have new coats and new N95’s and are ready for some holiday cheer.

Annual Christmas Eve Duffy boat ride to see the holiday lights.

I wrote this two years ago, but six years out and even this week I was smacked in the face with a lot of the feelings I describe above. Divorce grief is real, and long-lasting.
