The culmination of Kembe’s scheme from my last post. I approve of none of this but he’s quite proud.

I found the answers to these questions really fascinating. I will share where we are at. I don’t think quarantine is over. I do believe that my state reopened too early, and that is proving to be clear as we watch our case numbers and hospitalizations spiking. So we are still mostly at home except for essential excursions or trips to get out in nature. The kids have occasional, outdoor, distanced playdates with a very small group of other kids whose families are also mostly quarantined. The boys skate around town with masks. They all swim and ride bikes. We won’t be doing camps this summer. I support mask mandates because the science is that it reduces spread, and I do it for others as well as for myself. Unless a readily available treatment option emerges we will likely do distance learning from home next year (our school district is hopefully making it an option.) I don’t love any of this. I don’t love how it’s affecting my kids or my own stress levels and sleep. But we have a lot of talks about how our behavior right now is for the good of everyone, and how collective responsibility is one of our values. We aren’t “living in fear”, we are making active choices informed by science and for the good of those around us. I know some of this is charged and some of it is political, and that speaking some of my own values can make others feel shamed. That’s not my intent … just sharing what is driving our decision-making right now.
Karis is in the “paint everything black” phase of her emo artist journey.
Can we have both please.
