Today in Kembe’s fashion blog … knee socks, custom-painted shorts, a reflective traffic vest and an Afro pick. 🤷‍♀️

Some celebratory cookies as we closed out the school year this week. We had a rocky start but we finally got the hang of distance learning (and I got the hang of working with people in the house.) It was a challenge but I think we all rose to the occasion, and everyone managed to end the year with “good enough” grades. Works for me.

A few months ago we watched a TED Talk called “the power of the afro pick” that shared the historical significance and pride of the afro pick, and the meaning of the raised fist on the pick that came into popularity in the 70’s. Kembe asked me to buy him one. It’s been in his hair every day since. ✊🏾

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but also a day to remember our past as a nation, and to resolve to keep pushing forward in the fight for equality for all. Image via @mrsdorsey1509

I’m chatting with @angieadoptee about her experience growing up with white parents, and the importance of white parents of black children to provide education and mentoring from black adults. We also talk about the disparity of black children in foster care, the distrust of law enforcement and social services, and the nuances of transnationally adopted kids being both immigrants from their home country and Black Americans.
