“I can’t win.” “It’s never good enough.” These are defeatist narratives I am hearing from white people who are dipping their toes into speaking about race for the first time, and finding it to be complex and nuanced and maybe not as easy as they’d hoping. I’m talking about the aspects of privilege that are bubbling up in these kinds of statements, from our belief that black voices should be a monolith, to our issues with taking correction, to our fears of getting things wrong that can hinder us for standing up for what is right. Let’s have an open dialogue about this. If you have felt this way, talk about what you are doing to press on.

In today’s convo @jonathan_merritt and I go in on a number of topics, from growing up pastors kids, to learning how to opt out of our drive to people-please, to the curious way some Christian leaders are handling the COVID-19 crisis, to our thoughts on LGBT-affirming theology. Jonathan is such a smart, out-of-the-box thinker and someone I always have interesting and in-depth conversations with, and I think you will enjoy it, too. You can find his book Learning to Speak God from Scratch here:https://amzn.to/2BTyPU8. And Rage Against the Minivan here: https://biglink.to/RATM

When you want to display your David Sedaris coffee table book but the teens are uncomfortable with the nudity. #censorship #sharpiebikinis

This is happening right now! And until about 4pm PT. Pop on over and ask me your burning questions on anything: broadway, parenting, bad reality tv, writing, talking about race, books, whatever. (Or just say hi and make me feel less alone over there. Reddit scares me.) https://bit.ly/RageAMA

My friend @BritBarron just wrote a digital guide on Racism 101. It was created for anyone and everyone who is wondering where to start and how to dive into this conversation. For those of you who feel moved by what you see on the news and social media but know you need to learn more, this for you! This guide covers the historical aspects of racism, privilege and power dyanmics, and personal responsibility. It looks at systems, communities, the importance of action, and your role in this work. By the end, it will help you develop a personal and professional anti-racist action plan. You can buy it here (or check my stories for a swipe-up link!): https://britbarron.com/racism101/understanding-racism-101-a-digital-guidebook

Just wanted to make sure everyone saw this work of literary performance art… @whoorl reading my fifth grade diary. I don’t want to brag, but I have clearly had some strong writing chops from an early age. And through years of therapy, I have finally been able to overcome that very traumatic night of Ella’s sister cussing in front of me.

This is going down tomorrow! Pop over and give me your burning questions on parenting, adoption, teaching kids about race, broadway, my deep thoughts on pop culture … whatever!

“It was all about love and justice. It’s in the great tradition of the best of black people, a people who have been hated, chronically and systemically, for 400 years, but have taught the world so much about hove, and how to love. We’ve got a love the world can’t take away. We refuse to give up . . . We are gonna go down swinging in the name of love and justice. ” – Dr. Cornel West

I’m #1 at motherhood!!! Okay I’m just #1 in the motherhood category on Amazon but you can bet your ass I will be calling myself “#1 in motherhood” in every conflict with my children from here on out. DID YOU REALLY WANT TO ROLL YOUR EYES AT THE NUMBER ONE IN MOTHERHOOD? #assholeparent #number1assholemom #aprophethasnohonorinherhometown

Launch day! I thought I’d be spending this day partying with friends. It’s a little quieter than planned. But I have a cake. And woke up to some lovely video messages from friends. I’ll take it.

One of the bonuses for anyone who preorders my book is the chapter (booklet?) about parenting in a pandemic. It’s longer than a chapter. I had a lot to say. I talk about the psychological effects, the startling shared experience of teaching our kids at home, and the continued need to let ourselves off the hook in this unique period in time. I’m sharing today because IT IS THE LAST DAY TO GET THIS. My book launches tomorrow, but if you buy it today, you get this, PLUS a signed bookplate that you can have me dedicate to yourself or anyone you want. To order the book and grab these bonuses before they are gone, go here: https://www.kristenhowerton.com/preorder-redemption

My book launches tomorrow!! Which means today is the last day to get the preorder bonuses. Like a bookplate that I will sign according to your request. This is what Erica ordered for her dedication . . . who I have never met in my life. 😂 https://www.kristenhowerton.com/preorder-redemption
