Life Lately

June 1, 2020

People love to say that racism has to be taught. I’m not so sure anymore. I think we are swimming in a racist environment and kids pick up on it because it’s all around us. One thing I do know: antiracism has to be taught. We need to be intentional. And it needs to be an ongoing dialogue.

Being antiracist should not depend on your political party. But we cannot change things until we refuse to elect people who are not actively anti-racist. @latashamorrison breaks it down on @selfiepodcast.

| @glennondoyle and I are chatting about rewriting the narrative around “perfection”, parenting in a pandemic, letting go of unrealistic expectations, and more. You can find Glennon’s book here: https://amzn.to/2A2DqCr And Rage Against the Minivan here: https://biglink.to/RATM

Where have your kids been doing school? We’ve kind of spread all over the house and yard. I decided right at the beginning that bedrooms would not be schoolwork rooms and I think that has served us well. India and Kembe have loved working outside. We have finally found our rhythm with the distance learning thing … but we are all ready for the summer break! Three more week. *Excuse the bike graveyard.

White people … if you are baffled at why this keeps happening and want to better understand the “why” and the “what next”, here are some places to start.

Woke up to this fun news. Amazon made Rage Against the MInivan one of their “perfect summer read” picks. And it’s still on sale. Huzzah! (Yes I just binged The Great.) https://amzn.to/2THM5Be

We decided to release three chapters that are relevant to what is going on right now, that will help bring a little levity (and a few laughs) about parenting amidst the unexpected. Available for anyone who orders before June 9th. Redeem at this link: https://www.kristenhowerton.com/preorder-redemption

The boys went for a walk and found a neighbor putting a wine fridge on the curb and that’s the story of why my teenage boys have a wine fridge in their bedroom. 😂

Here’s a grainy, 5-year-old picture with my friend @laura.tremaine. I’m on her podcast @10thingstotellyou today, where we are talking about “quarantine shame.” Have you hidden some of your socializing for fear of being judged? Have you judged other people for socializing? Have you been afraid of being judged? We’re going in on the awkward dynamics of social distancing. Link in my stories.

I’ve been parenting in a pandemic for over two months so obviously I am an expert. Okay . . . I don’t know what I’m doing either. But I wrote a lot about it, from the emotional toll it’s taking to the lie that any of us will be finishing a novel. Available as an immediate download for anyone who orders before June 9th. India is offended at being misquoted and would like me to post this clarification.

Never thought as an ex-evangelical I’d be giving a Twitter sermon on tithing but here we are.
