Gifts that gift back: fashionABLE jewelry

November 18, 2015

The holidays are approaching and it’s the time of year that I love to highlight companies that offer really cool products while also giving back. Today I want to talk about one of my favorites: FASHIONABLE. Photo Nov 15, 11 30 14 AM What I love about FASHIONABLE is their combined approach of innovation and beautiful products with creating sustainable solutions to poverty.   FASHIONABLE isn’t just another business whose model is giving money or gifts to the poor, but they recognize that social enterprise should be about creating jobs.  There’s nothing wrong with giving some of your proceeds away, but that’s simply charity. And it’s often not really helping the problem of systemic poverty, but in fact encouraging it.  Real social enterprise should be about creating jobs and providing opportunity where you want the benefit to happen. FASHIONABLE started working in Ethiopia five years ago, providing weaving jobs for women who coming out of the commercial sex industry. They quickly expanded to working with leather partners in Africa as well.  Then, this summer, they expanded their impact  and now work with women both locally and globally who have overcome challenges ranging from prostitution to addiction to a lack of opportunity.   They believe their roles is to invest in a woman, and that when she is empowered with work to do, she not only experiences the joy and satisfaction of developing a skill, she also creates change in those around her. And you guys. Their products really are beautiful.  Their distressed leather Mamuye Tote is my favorite bag ever (seen on the likes of Jessica Alba, Minka Kelly and Julianne Hough. no big deal). And their gorgeous scarves (that also double as the perfect beach sarong), are hand-made and named after a heroic woman they work with, attached with a note of what she is ABLE to do because she has a job.   The new jewelry collection has so many amazing options, too.  Their newest feature — customizABLE  — allows you to actually design your own necklaces and ring stack. You can stamp personalized names or letters on several of the pieces. And then the women they’ve hired will create your unique piece! I just designed a couple necklaces and a ring stack myself: Photo Nov 15, 11 32 30 AM Photo Nov 15, 11 32 57 AM Photo Nov 15, 11 52 21 AM And the fine folks at FASHIONABLE are offering a special deal to you guys…. use the code RATM for 15% off + free shipping from today until Wednesday, 11/25.
