the fourth in pictures

July 5, 2011

One of the things I love about our neighborhood is our annual block party on the 4th of July. The kids really love it, too, and they could barely sleep from excitement last night.

It started with the annual parade.  Each year we get the local firemen to lead the parade by basically nagging them for the month of June and promising them free food.

I think this guy wins the Best Costume award for the parade.

Katie was none too thrilled to be wearing this cheerleading costume, but I forced the issue because, hello? SO CUTE.

Marshmallow War. An integral part of the party every year. We pretend like it is for the children. But in reality, it usually ends with a bunch of dads knocking down the children to pelt each other.
My husband had the distinction of being the only father to use a toddler as a human shield. I’m so proud.

After the games, the kids did a talent show. My girls did an impromptu cheer routine, and my boys did some less than thrilling tricks on their bikes. And then this dad showed up and schooled everyone with some ACTUAL TALENT. My boys want to be him when they grow up.

We ended the evening with the usual DIY fireworks display. Because nothing says I Love America quite like explosives mounting on rickety wooden ladders. Happy 4th!
