A couple weeks ago I spoke at ALT Summit. This year, the conference was having a party where everyone was requested to wear green. The night before my flight, the dress I had so cleverly ordered online had not yet arrived to my door. It was a Tuesday, which means my husband was working late. So I had to schlep all four kids to the mall as I searched for a new green frock. One of the stores we walked through was Gap, and there was a large photo of Cyndi Lauper and Billy Porter on the wall: The kids immediately noticed the poster, and India and Kembe exclaimed that it looked like them as grown-ups. I had to agree. Especially since Kembe, at that moment, was wearing his fake black hipster glasses that he scored at the dollar bin in Target. I told the kids it would be funny if we tried to take the same picture, and India held me to it. When I got back from ALT, we had a little photo session. I put Kembe’s afro into chunky pieces and added a streak of red chalk to India’s hair. And of course, some red lipstick. The kids had a lot of fun posing and trying to get their facial expressions just right. India wanted every detail to be the same – she even crafted a little dangly ring from one of my bracelets. After I got the shot and doctored it up a bit, I did a side-by-side and posted it on my instagram account. I really had no idea this photo would garner so much attention, but within a day it was being retweeted by Gap, the actors in the first photo, and the twitter page for Kinky Boots. Then it was featured on Huffington Post and Jezebel, where several women reported that their ovaries had exploded. Sorry about your lady parts, gals! By the way, an exorbitant number of people inquired about India’s lip color. It’s bareMinerals Moxie in Live It Up, and if it were up to her, she would wear it every day.
