mid-september photo dump
It may be mid-September but it is still HOT. We don’t have A/C. We’ve been doing what we can. Kids, man. They grow up so fast. Kembe and India had their first school project: to make a puzzle piece of pictures and words that describe them. I think it’s cute how completely different they are. Kembe’s is all about sports. India’s is all about the arts. Appaman sent us some new back-to-school threads. I am digging the beanies and may steal one of them for myself. Thanks, Appaman! . . .
summer photo dump
Thanks so much for all of you who weighed n on my post about summer regrets. It was a great reminder that I’m not alone in these feelings, and that the reality of the daily grind is true for every family, working moms or not. I put too much pressure on myself to have the perfect summer. Next year, I’m going to shoot for relaxing, unstructured summer – and if that means the kids jump around on the trampoline in costumes like they did for most of this summer, so be it. Ironically, I had also . . .

It’s been a while since I’ve cleared the photos off my phone. I’ve got about a month’s worth of photos I need to save – here are a few of them. Let’s start with kids with messy faces. Karis is a big fan of black beans. She practically inhales them, which means that any time we go to Wahoos or Café Rio or any other number of joints that serve black beans, this is what she looks like midway through her meal. India got to pick out of a prize bin at her scouting program, and she . . .

Last week was a bit of a doozy – too much on the calendar and too many things throwing a wrench into the system. One afternoon I slipped off to my room to lay down and clear my head with some alone time. This is how it turned out. My friend Jenn and I got a rare night out together to see the Kelly Clarkson show in LA. I got a chance to have lunch with Kelly last year, and I am a huge fan. Her talent is unbelievable, but she’s also just a really cool, likable . . .
easter weekend
On Saturday we decided to take the kids to a nearby feed store so they could see some baby chicks and bunnies. Aside from the experience for the kids, we had an ulterior motive: we’ve been contemplating getting some chickens for our backyard. We think we can fit a small roost near the garden, just behind the compost bin. I KNOW. I don’t know who I am anymore. If I start wearing Birkenstocks, feel free to stage an intervention for me. Karis is our little animal lover. It . . .

Last week was open house at the kids’ preschool, and I left all inspired to turn my home into a virtual Montessori setting. I went to a teacher supply store the next day. As it turns out, Montessori equipment is ridiculously expensive. I decided I would pay for their college instead. But I did get this little letter puzzle and flashcards that they are enjoying. India’s favorite activity is to play “home school”. Somehow I always end up in the role of teacher, whereas . . .

Cousin Tanner’s birthday party was on St. Patrick’s Day, so in the morning we had some eggs fortified with green food dye before we headed out the festivities. We were also forced to leave chocolate in a leprechaun trap, because the night prior all of the children were acting like it was Christmas Eve, and apparently their childhood dreams would have been shattered had we not complied. To whatever mother decided that St. Patrick’s had to be yet another holiday where I have to craft . . .

This is a gonna be a quick and dirty dump. (WOW THAT SOUNDED BAD). No time for commentary . . . I’ve got a very exciting evening planned that involves a glass of wine and the season 1 finale of Friday Night Lights. You understand. Here are some scenes from our life in the last few weeks. . . .

One of the things I love about my kids is that they love to dress up. The girls spend most of their days at home in one costume or another. (And if not in a costume, Karis is usually in a diaper). Every day they find new and more creative ways to give me anxiety. Lately they’ve taken to using our headboard as a diving board. How we’ve never been to the ER is a question for the ages. New Year’s goal: go to the beach more. I’m really trying. This is India’s . . .
